Entering UK on spousal visa, then leaving and returning
« on: February 08, 2005, 10:47:16 PM »
Hi everyone! I'm so glad I've stumbled across this forum. My hubby and I are planning to move from the US to the UK in May 2006. I'm planning on applying for law school in the UK and eventually qualifying as a UK solicitor. As such, in March 2006, I need to fly to London to attend interviews for a training contract. Should I go as a visitor (is that even legal considering I'll be essentially applying for jobs while I'm there) or should I first apply for my spousal visa and enter using it, even though I will be returning to the US after interviews and not actually entering the UK to settle until May?  :P

Get the spouse visa - that way everything is clear and above board with no room for misunderstandings.  It doesn't matter if you go back and forth on it a few times before settling here.

I agree with Britwife. If you come on a visitor's visa, and the Entry Clearance Officer suspects that you are planning to settle or get a job (it's illegal to work on a visitor's visa)  he can refuse entry, and that can cause problems for you later when you try to apply for your spouse visa.
