Giving something up for Lent
« on: February 09, 2005, 08:41:21 AM »
I'm not particularly religious and definitely don't follow any one religion, but for some reason I've always liked the idea of giving up something for Lent.  Odd, I know, but it makes me think more about what others have to give up or don't have in their lives.  This year I decided to give up crisps as I tend to eat them almost every day.  Is anyone else giving something up for Lent?

Me thinks I will give up candy.  All types (except gum).

I'd love to give up booze, but i know that won't happen!

I'm giving up carbs.  Or more specificially -- white bread, potatoes, and sugar.  Oy!   :o

(I might not be very friendly for the next few days.  You have been warned.   ;))

I'm Episcopalian, so always observe Lent.
Sometimes I do it very, very badly indeed!   :-X

But this year Im giving up bread.  I eat FAR too much of the stuff... sandwiches are so convenient, toast is great comfort food, etc...  it's got to go!  :-\\\\

Well, you could do that like Jewish people do (I think it's at Passover) and give up all wheat products except Matzo!  ;)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I was going to g ive up chocolate but I am really stressed out (putting in the settlement visa application next week!).  Can not give up booze.  Bread is my life line.  I usually give up soda, and I would do that but I just drank a diet pepsi so it's too late for that now!  Oh dear, maybe I'll just give up giving stuff up this year and make up for it next year by giving up two things......... ???

I always try to give something up that I want to "quit" forever.  Last year, that was "additions" to foods: mainly sugar in my coffee and salt on my food.  The sugar was adding girth and the salt is bad for me as I have a kidney disease.  Lent was a great way to get over it.  Come Easter, I still didn't use the stuff and now, a year later, I am still "off" of sugar and salt as post-preparation additives.

As a Catholic (maybe other faiths do this too?) we are taught that Lent is not just about giving something up--it is a symbolic sacrifice to remind us of the sacrifice Christ made for us.  So, taking something on is just as important/valid as removing something from your life.  These things can be helping at a local charity every week, going to daily mass, driving those unable to drive themselves to Drs appointments, shopping centers, church, whatever.  The hope, of course, is that by the end of the 40 days you have developed a new habbit/hobby that is no longer a "sacrifice" but something you do willingly and happily.

So, I will be taking something on this year, rather than giving something up.  For Lent, I will go out of my way to speak with varrious people who use the services of the Seattle Mission every day.  I will take the time to humanize thier story, to learn from them and, hopefully, I will meet a freind or two by doing so.

Out of this, I hope I can help someone who may need help, and learn something from those who have a lesson to be taught.

Now I'm totally baffled ... I've never heard of Lent, is this more an American tradition? I thought at first it was a jewish tradition but reading Frances post, I'm confused. Would some nice person tell me what Lent is about? Is that something like fasting? I vaguely remember something like that after the German carnival season (which ended today ... Ash Wednesday)  ???  :)

Here's a FAQ about it:

http://www.cin.org/users/james/files/lent.htm

It's a religious tradition, so depending on your religion or how observantly you were raised you may not know about it, but it's not purely American.
