If he's going to apply in person with you, there's no need for a letter. Otherwise, just general stuff is needed -- he just needs to acknowledge that he's aware of and supports your visa application. The supporting documents will attest to his ability to support and house you until you can work, so there's not really any need to address financial stuff or the history of your relationship.
