Thanks Leah I found myself lost with some of those from time to time! I had no problem making up my own meanings, but wasn't always even close ;D

LOL

I love that IAG means both I am good and I am gay. I can see problems with that one.

LOL I just looked at the extensive list, some of them are longer than if you just typed out the words! My favorite is the "bucked naked" one haha can't remember what it was!

I have to say that, although I occasionally use them, I find acronyms very annoying in day-to-day internet writing or messages. Longstanding, well-established acronyms (or abbreviations) are one thing: for instance, saying or writing "FBI" rather than "Federal Bureau of Investigation," or "NASA" rather than "National Aeronautics and Space Administration," or "IMF" rather than "International Monetary Fund," or "NAACP" rather than "National Association for the Advancement of Colored People." In those cases, it's a mouthful to spell or say the full name, rather than use the acronym/abbreviation.

But I think it's a sad statement about society if people are getting so incredibly lazy that they can't take the additional second or two it takes to type "by the way" rather than "btw," or "be right back" rather than "brb." Or, the WORST, typing the number "2" rather than taking the agonizing hours it takes to type "to." It's not a matter of being "uncool"--the simple fact people have to ask what these so-called timesaving acronyms mean says it all.

I have a bias as an editor, but I don't think you need to be an editor to see how silly/stupid it's getting. No WONDER so many students both here and in the States are having problems spelling. And adults CERTAINLY shouldn't be promoting that stupidity on the net. That is, IMHO.

But not when lazy people use it to refer to as 2 in a text message or email, as in I am going 2 the bar, it's a bugbear of mine 'TWO' ;)

Heh ... Suzanne, hope you didn't take it personal, it was more a tongue in cheek thing  ;)

Anyhoo, in fact, I'm doing it the other way round :) I used to write about music and other "scene" events in Berlin/Germany until about 13 years ago but I guess my English is nowhere near to try the same over here. And sadly enough, being exposed to a foreign language day in, day out has resulted in my forgetting German vocabulary. It's a tough realization for someone whose strongest weapon used to be words ...  :(

As a gamer, I can't quite express how helpful shortcuts like brb and afk can be.  Especially when you're involved in 4 pm's, guild chat, group chat, and ooc (out of character) chatting.

Ask and ye shall be babbled at.

I use a lot of acronyms in texts just to save space.

What's wrong with being lazy?  Besides, I think that "Laugh Out Loud" isn't as aesthically pleasing as LOL.  Sounds like a stage direction to me.  Now if someone was paying me to write..?  That would be completely different.
