Silly Names
« on: June 26, 2003, 05:59:11 PM »
Okies, I'm sitting here at work typing up the various quotes, blah blah blah, and we're doing one for a place called Horringer.   [smiley=freak.gif]

I don't know why, but the name just cracks me up!

So spill, any wacky place names you've seen, been to, heard of?

Bolsover.

Jon was raised there and it's where my inlaws live.

Clapham had me in hysterics the first time our train went through there.  LOL David's face!  "What's wrong with Clapham?"  "Nothing, it just makes me think of piglets with a venereal disease."   :o

This was made worse by me realising, we live in Feltham, so I know where they got it.  ;D

Any UK town ending with piddle or puddle...

Torpuddle for example..... a torr is a hill so what's that a peeing hill?

Oh and the two Cotswold towns....Upper and Lower Slaughter!

Anything that has "Cum" in the name.  Can't think of any name specifically at the moment, but I've seen it, I swear! [smiley=blush.gif]

I once saw a sign for Freezy Bottom in Enfield.  Good grief, what a name!

Yeah, they live right across the street from the castle. I didn't get a chance to get a good look at it, but the area is really lovely.

Ok I have a couple to add.  These come from Canada.  Newfoundland specifically.  I was researching ancient family and these were too funny not to mention.

1. Come by Chance
2. Placentia
3. Dildo - no kidding - I know what you're thinking too! lol
4. Paradise, Conception Bay, Newfoundland

Oh and the only strange/funny one I found here in Massachusetts is Cummaquid.  Don't ask and I won't have to make something up!

There's a town out here somewhere I keep passing called,

"Warninglid"

Now it's not funny or anything, just... doesn't seem like it should be a TOWN name.  *shrug*  I'd love to hear the story about that one.
