Introducing myself
« on: February 20, 2005, 12:56:30 AM »
I'm Dee a naturalized US citizen with retained citizenship in Belize. I plan to move to UK in the next year and half to be nearer to family in Cumbria.  ;D Stumbled across this site and liked what I viewed and so I'm introducing myself to everyone here and look forward to reading through the forums a bit more and hopefully meet some good people eh. My first language is French but also speak English or close enough to what's understood as English. LOL Best off to look further.
Dee

Hiya Dee and welcome to UKY... can't say I have ever had the pleasure to meeting someone from Belize... what is it like there?

When I was in Belize I much much enjoyed living there. There's so many North American tourist and those that come to live permanent that meeting people was readily available. Most of people from Belize are trilingual and speak Kriol which is patois but not the same language as Creole like spoken in the US. Sort of an english french and spanish. The Mayans still speak their language. But most speak English well enough as it's the official language. When speaking there many don't use plurals or past tense such as "collect the books can often be said collect the book" or "children is child" "people is person" and so on. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is the constitutional Head of State of Belize and used to be British Honduras.

I would suggest anyone take a visit there but for those used to common things like hot water and the like that they call forward and request information on where they stay as if you plan to bathe or shower. Although warmer in climate about 100 F degrees in the shade there many travellers don't realise that most of the facilities they visit don't provide hot water and it comes out cold about 36 F degrees. But some facilities offer heated shower heads so that visitors not freeze, but I've been told that the water is easy to learn to deal with. But remember it's warmer so it feels good to have that cold water too.

In Belize they're still up and coming to a more modern living but there's no rush on things where we didn't feel a pressure to have what our neighbours have or to blend in so well with everyone else. Quite the nice relaxed state of mind there. Warm and welcome life. If ever wanting travel to an island like Jamaica or Burmuda you can have just as fine a trip or better to Belize for about half the cost.

The people in Belize and perhaps I'm biased are extremely friendly and helpful. You can still find small villages off on their own amongst the forest. It's an inexpensive place to live and lots to do. I love the smell of the air there can't get enough of it. The reef the ruins and wild life are more than an eyeful.  I wouldn't drive there if accustomed to driving with observed rules though but you don't need to I would say have someone take in you on while there as a rental to drive is expensive and they are environment friendly. Green is the word. Don't know if this help tell you much about life there but hope it did and thanks.

Dee

Hey Dee that was wonderful.  I am a travel junkie and culture junkie and love living and visiting lots of places... now if I just had the money... :P

I also think it's great for people to speak so many languages.
