Video tapes, security things
« on: February 25, 2005, 06:43:19 PM »
I would like to bring our wedding video and a couple of other videoes to the states with me to transfer to DVD while I am there for my family. If I pack them in my checked luggage, will they be wiped by whatever security apparatus things are used to scan luggage?

Slightly "off topic" ... remember that UK videos are typically PAL and USA ones NTSC.  Many players are dual standard these days, but thought I would mention it just in case it might be an issue

Yes, I have already checked ahead to make sure that the UK tapes can be transfered with no problem in regards to the PAL vs NTSC issue, and I am planning on having the DVDs made region 0 so the will play both in the states and over here.

As long as the tapes don't get wiped in transit, we are set. :)

One pass through a modern X-ray machine is unlikely to do any lasting damage, although some older units produce much stronger magnetic fields, and repeated passes X-ray can have an accumulative detrimental effect on the recorded signal.

In the U.S., officials always used to be obliged to honor requests for hand inspection rather than X-ray.  Not sure about these days -- The law could have changed.

There's no specific region coding on video tape, but yes, you will find many domestic VCRs here which will play NTSC tapes (but will not record in NTSC format).  You'll need a TV set which also accepts NTSC-format video signals.  Again, many modern sets have such capability.

No damage to the tapes and were able to transfer them to DVD which is viewable both in the US and UK.  :)

Glad to hear you got it resolved, Stella Marie. I'm coming late to this thread and I was going to say that it's recommended you carry any kind of film in your hand luggage. The Xray equipment is not as powerful as the type being used to scan checked-through bags. You can ask for hand-search, but these days they will probably scoff and point to the sign that says "it's safe; deal with it".

azroomie, your B&W trouble probably comes from using an older TV model, and one that is itself not multi-region. Regardless, if you're connecting with an S-video, for sure it won't work. If by scart and they are multi-region (BOTH the TV and the DVD player), could one of the pins be damaged? Sometimes the pin gets pushed in. Just take tweezers to realign.

If you still have questions about household goods, you might want to continue this conversation in an area of this forum like Expate Life or Moving Issues or Home and Garden. Your question will get lost in this section.
