« on: March 02, 2005, 06:00:49 AM »
About 2 months ago I was researching Universitys online and came across a problem..Even though students in England finish school once they are 16..and over here 18..for me to study at one of the universitys, do I have to be 18 years old?

Some students do finish school at sixteen, but students wishing to go on to University stay on at school and study A levels.  So they are leaving school at 18.

I don't think it's a requirement for you to be 18 to apply for universities, but you will definitely need at least a high school diploma. Most first year students over here tend to be slightly older than freshmen in the US (18 and 19, or older), so if you aren't 18 yet, you'll probably be quite a bit younger than most of your classmates.... unless you go for a foundation year. Are you applying directly out of high school?

Yes, I want to eventually move there when I am 18 and become a citizen..However, I know nothing about what it takes.

Have you been to the UK before? If you still have a while yet to go before you turn 18, I know there are summer programs out there for high school students that allow you to study in the UK. That will probably give you a tiny taste of what it's like to live there sooner, if you're really dying to go over.  :)

Also, being a university student is probably the best way to sample life in the UK, because it gives you the opportunity to try it out for a while and decide for yourself if you really do want to end up living there, without the total commitment of moving over point blank. So if you're interested in moving over when you're 18, that's probably the best way to do it.  ;)

Thank you so much! Would you happen to have any information on these summer programs or know where I can learn more about them? I am really interested!

I hear this is a really great program (it's for high school students ages 15-18):

Also maybe check out these links for more ideas:

There are loads of things to choose from.  :) Hope that helps!

You might be confused about terminology. English students finish college before they are 18, but that's because "college" refers to pre-university education, not "college" in the sense that we Americans use the same as synonmous with university.
