Great info. I can't wait to get groceries delivered. That is just great !!!!!!! And they say that the UK has fewer conveniences. Grociers delivered to your door and organic groceries to boot, sounds like a terrific convenience to me.  I have read so many threads here about expenses and how the UK is so much more expensive than the US, I just don't see how this is. I hope I am not over looking anything, but it really seems to me that the food for one, is much less expensive. We do eat primarily organic and do shop at smaller stores that support local farm, but it is very costly.  Costly, but worth it. It seems as though good quality, local food is so available at at very reasonable prices. Thanks again for all of the info.

I think a lot of it depends on two things - where you're from in the US and whether or not you've been successful in not constantly doing dollar-pound conversions in your head (or on paper! LOL.) I'm from the SF Bay Area and to me the UK is not anymore expensive than that was. And I realized as soon as my American money had run out (I used my American cash card for the first month or so) that it was pointless to convert - I live in England, I use the pound. Period.

If anyone lives near the Headingley area of Leeds, you may be interested to know that the local community are trying to set up a monthly Deli/Farmers market on a Saturday or Sunday. They are asking interested people to email them and let them know whether they would shop at such a market monthly, and what stalls they would like to see.  Emailed responses or comments can be sent to rharkess@hotmail.com.

I have no doubt that'd be very popular. Headingley is such a massive student area.

If I hadn't just moved away from Headingley, I'd be excited. Might email them anyways. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this thread and for all the great info! I work at Feast! a specialty food store in Charlottesville, VA. It began as a specialty cheese shop , but has grown into much more. Our mission is to support local farmers and sustainable agriculture. We always carry a huge selection of local, seasonal produce. I try as much as possible to eat local produce, meat and eggs. I'm moving to the UK in May of next year, and I'm so happy to hear that local foods are so accessible and affordable! I'm looking forward to trying new things! Thanks again!  ;D ;D

Speaking of cost, we have a local farmer's shop.....the prices for lettuces are 1.99 for three extremely large heads (think basketball size) of a selection of good green/lolla rossa/etc.  My family eats five salads, plus in sandwiches for that.  It is also heartier and lasts longer.
The grocery store cheapest lettuce, little gems or whatnot, costs nearly a pound and barely lasts two-three days.
Potatoes are cheaper, eggs are cheaper.
I actually get my dry goods/ some meat/ at the grocery store and then run over to the farmer's shop to complete the shop.  Well worth it.

Has anyone ever used Organics To Go's delivery service? It sounds soooo good, but I'd like to hear some recommendations before I go wild and start ordering everything.

He'll be delicious!! I always buy free range corn-fed chickens when I do a roast -- it's so worth it. Enjoy!  ;D

X-Posted

I have to put in a plug for Rod and Ben's Box scheme.

Not only do they have the best eggs on the planet they also have great soups and produce.

They are on a much smaller scale than some box schemes and really personable and great people to boot. Right now most of you would have to do mail order, but they go throughout a lot of Devon and up to Bristol and have allied with the folks from Well Hung Meat.
