Decaf Chai
« on: March 08, 2005, 04:44:47 PM »
OK, I've been searching high and low for some decaf chai teabags, but have had no luck. Does anyone know where I could get some? I've even been surfing the net for a place to mail order them, but have failed. I've found regular chai, but I can't have caffeine, so I definitely need decaf. Bear in mind that the only grocery stores I have anywhere near me are Tesco and Somerfield.   :-[  Although I can get to a Sainsbury and Safeway when visiting the BF. Help!

Are you willing to try to make your own? If so, I can help you there...
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I wouldn't rule it out, but I think first I'd like to keep looking for the quick-fix! Is the homemade kind a lot better?

Well, you can tweak it to suit your taste. Essentially it's a spice mix so if you don't like too much of a certain spice, you can add less. That said, you'll either need to make tea bags or use a strainer and a teapot.

But here's a tip for you that I literally learned a few days ago. Like you, I need as little caffeine as possible. Apparently, if you take a regular tea bag, poor the hot water on it, steep for 30 seconds, take the bag out and throw out water and THEN add water and steep again, you are losing over 70% of the caffeine.

Technically, chai is just tea. But the western use of the term is black tea with a mixture of spices and sugar and then mixed with milk. It's your usual cuppa (white) with spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, etc. You can get it at Starbucks and other coffe bars as well as in bags and also UHT boxes (in the US).

It's also a staple in Indian households.  The recipe varies and some een add black peppercorns to the mix.

Exactly, in India, chai tends to have a lot more milk than usual.  My family in India can't live function without it.   :)  I was never a big fan of Indian masala chai.  Give me hot water and a tea bag and I am happy. ;D

You said it, wench! That scrummy spiciness with hot steamy milk and a good dollop of honey. Mmmmm....

Thanks for the recipes. They sound delish, but I think maybe I'm too lazy. I need teabags!!!! I can't see me slicing fresh ginger every time I want a cup of chai! Maybe on special occasions, but not all the time. Sorry!  :-\\\\

You could use dried ginger or even 'lazy ginger' from a jar.

That said, not sure why you haven't found them on the net (though I don't know if they deliver to the UK ):

If they don't deliver to the UK, I'm happy to order them for you if you don't have a US address you can have them sent to.

Thanks so much for the links. Yes, they do ship to the UK. I've emailed them and am waiting for a reply about international shipping costs. Thanks!!  I was trying to find somewhere in the UK that could ship me my decaf chai -- maybe that's why I couldn't find anything online. Anyway, looks like I'll have to have it shipped from the US.

Also, I meant to thank you for your tip about getting the caffeine out of regular teabags! Good to know!  :)
