UK company or US ??
« on: March 09, 2005, 10:47:22 PM »
Some have been in the UK for a while ...for those who have do you find yourself still out of place amonst brits when at social events or are you now more out of sorts when or if you meet up with american folk?
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

Neither - I feel perfectly comfy with both groups...and hang out with both groups.  I have a Brit boyfriend, hang out with my hockey club (primarily Brits but also a mix of other nationalities), have met up with folks from this group and do spend time with the Americans at work.  I guess I'm adaptable in some ways.

i can say that the people i'm drawn to at every corporate function are the americans...we just end up talking every time (my london company is about 30% american 70% brit and other).

but i'm comfortable with either when it comes to men.

i've had problems getting on well with too many english women.  but that's *just* me.  I do have a few english women friends.  Not many.

I don't find myself out of place at all, and haven't made any American friends (not in person, anyway) since moving here. I love chatting with all of you online, but I'm not geographically near anyone for a face-to-face get together.  :(  I love all my new British friends and I've never felt out of place. Maybe it helps that I was born here and have family here still. We have one other American woman in our village, but I steer clear of her. She's one of those people who calls you "Darling!" in a really loud voice every time she sees you and has to hug and kiss all the time. Ugh. Plus, she likes to think of herself as the village eccentric, which I find a bit poseur-ish. She walks around with her pet parrot on her shoulder. Spare me.

I did at first feel out of place when in groups-sort of like I didn't know the secret handshake.   :)  But I just kept forcing myself to join in and now, after many years I tend to forget I'm not British.  And actually, alot of my friends say the same thing.   ::)

I think that's what you call "the only American in the village" symdrome!  ;D

I'm blessed to have a good mix of both British and American friends, although I do feel closer or relate better to my American counterparts here. I would say most Brits are more fair weather friends..but they could always prove me wrong.

Where do you find Americans to socialize with, other than meetups with people on forums like this one? In the short time I've been in York, the only Americans I've ever seen are a few tourists who happened to be walking around the city center. I know that there are Americans living in York, but I suppose they are on another side of town somewhere, I haven't bumped into any.

I'm friendly with my fiance's family and friends, and I would like to join a book group or maybe some other type of group where I will meet my own friends, who I presume will mostly be English. And I expect to make some friends at work once I start working. So far, I've never had any English people  treat me any differently because I'm American.

If I happen to meet some nice Americans, of course I'll try to be friends, but I don't plan on going out of my way to find a group of Americans to socialize with.

There are no Americans at any of the 'social events' i go to.   I am not really sure i even go to any 'social events', but that might just be a slight difference in terminology!  ;)
I have a few very nice American friends, that i have met from this, and other, expat boards, but my day-to-day life at work/lunch/pub only contains Scots, and a couple of Geordies (but they're honourary Scots anyway!).

I feel like I'm a bit more British than American these days anyway, so I don't feel out of place with Brits when I'm socialising.  The majority of my friends are English or Scottish.  I've got a good friend who's French and another who's American.  These are the people I spend my time with on a daily or weekly basis.  I have a few American "acquaintances" that I've met off these boards.  I like them and socialise with them a couple of times a year, but our only common interest is that we're all American.  To socialise only with Americans would seem slightly xenophobic to me.
I'm sorry.  I'm just not cool.

I was thinking about the get-togethers from this forum when talking about social events with Americans.  I certainly don't feel uncomfortable socializing with Americans.  I have some really really good friends I've made and I see fairly regularly.  I also know a few Americans that I've met through the children and work.  But I'm friendly with them because I like them and have other things in common with them.
My friends though are British, and I met most of them when my big kids were babies.  My best friend is Scottish.
Sweetpeach, once you actually live here and have settled in, I'm sure you'll meet other Americans in the course of your day.

It helps when you work at The American School in London!   ;)   But then again, I tend to socialize more with people from Britain or other countries than Americans...

I lived here three years before meeting another American here. I love my Brit (and German :P) friends but I must say most are as American than I am. All my friends are open minded, loud and obnoxious as I am. If it werent for the accent nobody would know the difference.

I'm sure I will. I just haven't bumped into any so far just shopping, walking around, etc.  other than a handful of tourists. So far, putting all my visits together, I've spent about a month and a half in York. Then again, I haven't advertised that I'm interested in meeting  Americans.
