Although, the wet weather here is much more conducive to letting the natural curl be free.
It's ponytail weather for me.  And sometimes a baseball cap.   :)

There are lots of copy-cat Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mixes recipes out there.  Google them, try them and maybe they would work for you?

I'm seeing a lot of regrets in regards to California's summer clothes, which I had figured would be the case. I'm currently packing myself and trying to fit all my clothes in one suitcase. Being a Cali girl myself, that's proved easy if I just take away anything summer related.

What I am surprised about is the regrets in regards to high heels. Now, I rarely wear heels, but I do have three pair, and I adore them. Is there really no logical reason to ever wear them, even for special occasions or a night out? I really don't want to leave my gorgeous black lace ones...  :\\\'( They match a dress I have perfectly!

People wear heels a LOT.  Of course, bring them.

Anything you love you should bring, whether it's the prevalant style or not.  But, yes everyone (except me!) wears heels!

I have to disagree about leaving behind summer clothing. Unless you are going to be living in the far northern reaches of the Scottish Highlands OF COURSE you will have occasion to wear summer clothing"!!!!

I lived in Austin Texas while in the States, and it's HOT there for six months of the years. near 100 for much of the summer. Not only did I bring to the UK ALL my Austin summer clothing -- tank tops, all sleeveless tops and dresses, light clothing, flimsy clothing, sandals, strappy shoes ans yes, heels -- not only did I bring them but I found the need to wear them too, coming here in July. Those summer clothes saw me through the London July and August and even now I'm still using a tank top under a light cardigan on the balmier, milder days.

It just really irks me when people paint this picture of "oh FORGET your summer clothes, leave them behind you'll never need them in the UK!!"

That is just not the case. You won't get 100 Fahrenheit but you won't be wearing fur coats all summer either....... ::)

I think what many people mean when they post about leaving the summer clothes, is that you don't need nearly as many as you do in most of the US. I've been here 8 years now and can only recall one summer (2006) when I lived in summer clothes all the time. This summer, I think I've worn my pretty summer skirts less than 5 times total. Tops/tanks are a bit different as you can layer.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Well, moving over here to northern England from Tampa Bay...the only time I wore my all summer clothes (shorts, sleeveless/flimsy tops, sandals) this year was the week that I spent in Paphos, Cyprus...and I wore shorts maybe two days in England this year.  I did wear sleeveless tops or tanks more - but under a cardie...and flip-flops in the office for awhile - but outside, not so much.  For me, it was a big change going from where I wore summer clothes year-round & had no winter clothes at all, to this...  :P

Sort of like what balmerhon just posted.  :)

I grew up here in the UK wearing summer clothing all summer. Running around in a swimsuit in the back garden. Wearing summer skirts and tops. I guess It's what a person is used to or not. I just don't relate to what you guys are saying. Sorry.

I know I am probably going to get flamed for this, but I really don't understand the point of bringing over any type of food from the US. Eventually it is going to run out; eventually you are going to have to get used to the food that is sold in British shops and restaurants.

If you absolutely have to have a food (or anything else) that is not available in the UK, then you should seriously think about whether you want to move there.

Ditto. Moving from Miami, I had all kinds of summer clothes, lightweight, etc.  That's pretty much all I owned, (and several jumpers for the cold A/C).  Being in Northern Scotland, I've had no need for any summer clothes!  Occassionally my sandals, lightweight skirts, etc, but few and far between. Here, well at least where I live, where I have found patches of snow that haven't completely melted off the mountains, there were definitely summer days where the heat needed to be on!  Not my idea of flip-flop weather!
It is what you are used to.  90% of the US gets very hot in the summer and most folks have lots of summer clothes. Yes, you need summer clothes, but with less closet space in the houses here, the room you do have is better off with jumpers and long trousers, etc.

I have a drawer full of shorts that I have never worn once since I've moved here.

I think bringing over food from home is a normal way to make a transition when you are moving to a different country and I really don't think that wanting to bring food from home has anything to do with whether or not you should move over. I've lived away from the US for 4 1/2 years and still bring food back every time I visit the US. I also bring back food when I visit the other countries I used to live in; Germany and Sweden.
