Is it a faux pas...?
« on: March 12, 2005, 05:17:07 PM »
.. if I  don't wear  hat at a  wedding here  in the UK??  DH's  friends  are getting married  in May.. (I know I have  time)  but i was  wondering if  I really should  get a hat or not... DH has asked  me if I am going to  and  I have  no idea.. It seems like a huge  waste  of money  since  I am NOT a hat person at all..  baseball caps in the US  ya..    any comments? or experiences  or feelings  either  way??   thanks in advance...

It's not really a faux pas but if it's a really big flash wedding you might feel out of place if everyone else wears one.  Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.  I am just trying to think when I last wore a hat at a wedding and it was when I was the bride!

There was a mix of people in hats at my BIL's wedding.  I didn't feel out of place at all and I didn't wear one.

I've been to many weddings in the UK, both formal and casual, and not everybody wears a hat.  It's a matter of what you're comfortable with.

My sense is that it's important to wear/not wear what you feel comfortable with. If you're not into hats, then don't wear one. It's not like you're going to a horse race or anything.

Ive never worn a hat to a wedding. I cant see where it would be a requirement.

Ooooo, hats!  I was SO excited when I found out hats are worn to weddings here.  Couldn't wait to go to John Lewis and actually get a hat box.  FAB!  What a terrific chance to indulge in a hat.

Perhaps you've not heard of Ladies Day at Ascot?

I have to admit that I loooove hats, so I quite like that tradition. But I've never been to a wedding where the people not wearing them stuck out, so I agree with the "go with what you're comfortable" advice.... If you're still worried about it, John Lewis and other nice department stores have "hats" that are little more than hair decorations - combs with feathers and such - that I should think would make a non-hat person feel less uncomfortable - sort of a Hat Compromise.  :D

I've been to plenty weddings, and never wore a hat.  I just don't 'do' hats.
Some people suit them, but im not one of them.  :(

But anyway, i didnt feel out of place in any way... I'm sure you'll be fine!

Way off topic but maybe all us hatless gals can do Ladies Day at Ascot? :)  Always wanted to go but I heard its expensive and of course you have to have the best dress and hat! But it would be a hoot wouldnt it?

Royal Ascot is a great day out! I went a few years ago, not on Ladies Day, but everyone there was totally dressed up anyway.  You don't have to spend a lot. I bought a cheap black silk hat from Debenhams and tarted it up by winding a black feather boa around it.

:D I would love to go sometime.
My friend goes every year with work colleagues. Usually Im pregnant so I cant go. lol
Anyway she spends a fortune on a dress and hat. What a waste for just one day. But maybe if I lose 20lbs I can borrow some of her old stuff.  ;D
