I want to move back to the US, but we have been unable to as of yet as there is no way to legally get my mother-in-law (who is disabled) to move with us until my wife becomes a US citizen.
There are many things I do love about this country (pubs, lots of places to roam, beautiful countryside, friends we have made) but at this point I think it would be better for my family if we moved to the states. The main three reasons are:
1) My large extended family is all in the US and my wife has no family other than her mom here in the UK. It will be tough raising a child without the family support I would surely get in the states.
2) My company in the states would pay me more than I am making here. Combine that with the cost of living issues and I feel I could support my family much better if we lived in the US.
3) Maybe this is just a Midlands thing, but I don't like what I see regarding children in this country. The UK laws seem to overprotect kids; my wife was verbally harassed and physically threatened by a bunch of yobs for months on end where she used to live and the Police did nothing. Yet, if I were to lay a finger on them, they would lock me up for sure. I don't want my daughter growing up in an environment where large groups of kids roam around the streets at night looking for things to destroy. Maybe I'm biased, and maybe there are nicer places in the UK where this doesn't happen. But I can only go from our experiences.
But for now, we will focus on the good things, and the joy that our new daughter brings us. Que sera sera.......
