Cost of Shipping from UK to USA
« on: March 14, 2005, 08:36:06 PM »
Hi there I have been reading a lot about shipping costs from US to UK (obviously, given the nature of the forums!). However, I was curious ot know if anyone had any info/ experience of doing vice versa, from UK to USA. It would be roughly around a dozen medium size boxes which I would need to get across. Most valuble stuff I would prob ably try to take personally i.e. in luggage but otherwise I was wondering which is the best/safest/cost effective way to ship stuff otherwise to the US? If anyone has any helpful info I'd be very aprreciative. There is no Major urgency to the post, I just like to plan ahead and feel comfortable that I have a game plan, not be caught at the last minute! Thanks

My DF is moving stateside, and we looked into "Excess Baggage" ( www.excess-baggage.com ).  They had pretty fair rates, but in the end we decided to ship DHL.  His work contracts with them so he was able to get a better rate.  I came back to the states ahead of DF, and used Royal Mail, DHL, and UPS; depending on what I was shipping.

I know a few people have used the Royal Mail'e Parcel Force with luck.

Good luck!

We never found a cost effective way to do it, so in the end we left a lot of studd behind. DHLand Parcelforce websites will give you quotes. Places like Allied Pickfords will do small assignements like what you are talking about, but it is still pricey. We just didn't have the money to be shipping loads of stuff. When we go back in April for a visit we'll be able to ship a few boxes to the US, and we'll be using DHL. We will be shipping a large box with a doll's house in it and some other odds and ends. You can also use excess baggage. If you go directly through the airline (we used BA) they will let you bring excess bagage for a price, but they told us we had to bring it something like 24 hours ahead of our flight which was impractical because we lived too far away and weren't going to get a hotel for that night just to drop off some extra luggage. We ended up with 3 seats coming over (Philip had his own seat) so we could bring 6 suitcases. I had them weighed at my husband's work to make sure I had as much weight in them as possible. The 6th suitcase was actually a case we bought at B&Q filled with the most sentimental books, paintings, etc.
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

We used UPAKWESHIP  for 32 boxes..  They were great.

They ship from the UK to the USA as well.

the only thing i know is that american baggage and shipping lost my fiance's record collection
screwed us on our insurance claim
and charged way more then they quoted

3 company's to not work with:

Tober Group, Inc
Chatham Clearance
American Baggage - http://www.discount-shipping.net/index.cfm

the husband and wife that run american baggage are total scam artists and ultimately the sleaziest pair of people i have ever run across
be careful and get everything signed and written down and be prepared for lots of escalating hidden fees

shipping out of the uk was the biggest mistake we ever made and i one i will always regret
one thing that we found out is that the shipping industry is closely tied when you go outside of the FedEx and ups sort of company's.
they will lie for and protect one another when they screw up.

this all sounds so harsh but -
we learned a terrible lesson and lost a collection that can never be replaced.
the worst of it was - no one even apologized or took responsibility.
