Guilford was actually recommended to us. I would love any information re lifestyle and cost of renting.

Guildford has lots of commuters, it's pretty expensive, but quite a nice place to live.  I don't know anything about renting, but a friend of ours had good luck renting in a village between Woking and Guildford(Send, Ripley, Jacobs Well). 
There are really good schools, including Catholic schools.  There's a huge cultural mix.  People from all over seem to settle here.   :)
