people/places/things that will be missed
« on: March 16, 2005, 05:36:19 AM »
hey everyone!!!!!!

I'm just curious about what you missed the most once you arrived in the UK...Name the top 5 things that I should get my fill of before making the trip over.

Also....Is there anything in the UK that you can't live without and that can't be found in the US that I should look forward to???

 Thanks!!

The only thing i miss is good Mexican food.
Glasgow is the most fan-dabbi-dozi city in all of the UK (in my opinion) and i had such a brilliant time living there, that i never wanted for anything... except good Mexican.   :(

ULTA beauty supply stores.  But there's Sally Hansen here.

S/times, I could use a Good Times burger or a good Mexican.  So I make my own Mexican food.

In no particular order:

1.  mexican food
2.  my family
3.  southern accents and culture
4.  road systems that make sense  ;)
5.  conveniences we take for granted -- 24-hour everything, better selection in most stores, drive-thru banks, etc.

They've been listed above but...

1.  easier access to getting home (I used to be able to drive the 5 hours home)
2.  the ability to talk to friends and family at a normal hour
3.  some of the conveniences in banking and the like
4.  my Jeep, which I sold (used for large dog & kayaking)
5.  my big ol' yellow lab who used to sit in the back of my jeep & who is living with family

I don't miss any food to be honest as I can find everything I used to eat in the States here in London.

Non-food things I missed most:

1. My best friend & other good friends
2. My cat - who now owns my best friend
3. Warm weather, year-round sunshine & warm beaches (I moved from Tampa Bay, FL)
4. My job (that I was sick to death of & couldn't wait to leave)  ::)
5. Super Wal-Mart

Food things are tougher 'cause I can make most anything myself if I can find the ingredients, like good Mexican food, for instance. I miss certain restaurants, but let's see...

1. New York style pizza from the little neighborhood (mom & pop) Italian restaurant
2. My favorite Italian chain restaurant (I had 'my' waiter at the location I frequented)
3. Huge American pancake breakfasts -- like at IHOP
4. Having cold beverages served with lots of ice in them (you'd think there was an embargo on ice over here)
5. Family dinners & birthdays with my best friend's family: homemade New York Italian food, Carvel ice cream cake, cheap sparkling Lambrusco & everyone arguing quite emotionally with each other (an Italian family that puts the 'fun' in dysfunctional) ;)

Hmmm...

Like others, I do make most of the food I miss. But sometimes I just dont' want to...so here goes:

1. Frozen blueberries (only available in select supermarkets for some reason)
2. The variety of breakfasts you get in the US. I love a good full English but wish you could go out and get more than that - and related - going out for brunch on a Sunday.
3. Being in a city/town and just popping into a restaurant for dessert
4. Being able to go out for really good Mexican
5. Really good tomatoes. Ya just can't grow 'em here that well!

Non-food:

1. my family
2. baseball games
3. Thanksgiving (sorta food related but I do mean the holiday itself)
4. the convenience of shopping/banking/etc
5. that things cost less there

Things I'd most likely miss from the UK:

1. Channel 4 news
2. The Guardian
3. pubs
4. amazing flowering hanging baskets
5. the whole locally produced/sourced/organic/fairtrade food movement
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

1. being able to talk to friends and family whenever i wanted, not worrying about time changes.  I wish i did more of that.

2. Feeling comfortable in my surroundings-which i am getting used to the vibe of London-but most places i went to in the states and i just felt.....comfortable.  Upon moving i felt there was so much to learn even thoguh we all speak the same language!

3. Golf.  I miss playing golf for free, or really affordably.

4. A lot of comfort food, not even bad for me comfort food...that i miss

5. Knowing how everything works.  Financial Stuff.  Health Care stuff.

It's been a learning experience living here, but it's been fun!!!!

Just to even it out a bit, we should list the things we don't  miss as well. I know there are some for me, how about the rest of you?

You don't want to get me started!  ;)

Best absolute most wonderful thing about living in the UK is NEVER having to worry about running into "old friends" who weren't such good friends after all.  :P
