Songs with Hand Motions
« on: March 21, 2005, 08:25:03 PM »
Ok, other than Itsy Bitsy Spider and If You're Happy and You Know It what other songs are there with hand motions.  Boyo loves these songs, but we need to add to our repertoire and be darned if I'm not drawing a blank.

How about The Wheels on the Bus (go round and round, etc), In a Cabin in the Woods (currently Sophia's fave), Twinkle, twinkle little star?

Nope, do tell please!

The Bus song!  Good suggestion.  I know that one.  Same with Knees, Head, Shoulders, Toes.

Cabin in the Woods?  Never heard it.  Do tell please.

I know Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, but never learned hand motions to it.

I was hoping you'd know, I can't remember! My mum used to do it with me, I'll ask her and let you know.

I do the hokey cokey with Ethan - he lies down on the bed and I wave his legs and arms about, he loves it.

Here are some I've used with the kids I work with (When in America, I work in a pre-school. I want to eventually become a elementary-school teacher): Where is thumbkin?, Five little ducks went out to play, Hokey Pokey, I'm a little tea-pot, Patty cake. I have entire binder of them in America, but I'm in the UK right now!

my daughter used to love 10 in a bed:

Ten in a bed  ( show ten fingers)

and the little one  said ( wiggle the pinkie)

Roll over , Roll over ..so they all rolled over ( roll your hands)

and one fell out (show one finger falling)

thump (rub your head as if you've thumped your head)....

and continue on till you count down to one ( I tend to add different falling sounds -thump , plop , ping whatever) ...when you get to one then you say

the little one said " I miss u , I miss u"

then they all snuggled into back bed (fold all ten fingers together)

Most of the kids I work with looove doing the "Chicken Dance" for some reason. Not technically a kids song, but it's easy for them. (lol) Ring-around the rosie is another big hit! I use the Wee Sing series a lot too. Just tapes CD's with lots of kids songs, but they come with books that have the guitar chords/motions.

Two little dicky birds sitting on a wall
One named Peter, one named Paul
Fly away Peter, fly away Paul
Come back Peter, come back Paul

Can't remember the motions exactly  - I think you hide certain fingers and then bring them out again.

I'll add Five Little Monkeys, This Old Man, and One,Two Buckle my Shoe.

I know tons from working in schools and daycare.

The best thing is to make up actions to the songs you do know since Niall loves to make action and it doesn't matter if they don't make much sense.

Cabin in the Woods?  Never heard it.  Do tell please.

I know Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, but never learned hand motions to it.

In a cabin in the woods (make a little house with 2 pointer fingers)
A little man by a window stood     (hand on eyebrow. like looking off into the distance)
Saw a rabbit hopping by (make rabbit with 2 fingers hopping up and down)
Frightened as can be (act frightened)
'Help me, help me, help he said (wave arms around)
Or the hunter will shoot me dead (make hand like a gun)
Come little rabbit, come inside (motion to come in)
Safely to abide (we cuddle then, don't know what you are really supposed to do though!)

In typing this it seems such a barbaric song, but she loves it!

For Twinkle, twinkle

Twinkle, twinkle little star (open and close first finger and thumb like pincers)
How I wonder what you are (hands out and shrug shoulders)
Up above the world so high (sway hands over head)
Like a diamond in the sky (make fingers into diamond shape) etc.

Does that make sense?

Thanks a bunch to everyone for the additions!  We've been trying the Teapot today.  He claps when we are finished (he applauds all songs), but so far the handle and spout haven't appeared.  Soon though, very soon!

I remember a song from my childhood that also sounds barbaric now that I'm an adult.  Never thought of it that way when I was little; I was thrilled to hear my name in a song:

[Name], [Name] ain't no good
Chop him/her up for kindling wood.
