Hello From Easton/Allentown Pennsylvania
« on: March 22, 2005, 03:33:47 PM »
HELLO!!!
My names "Vicks" I'm 20 years old and want to move to Manchester England. :) I do not like my life over here and wish to start a new life w/ new experiences... of course using the same birth name... (would never change that) I have no criminal backround (except a traffic violation and a few unpaid bills which i would pay b/f i left of course) At the present moment i am living with my b/f (most likely soon to be EX-boyfriend) If you would like to know THAT story i am willing to share... Its a very crappy situation. :\\\'(  so basically i'm going to live with my mum... rent free, and going to save up and pay off my debts at the same time... and move when i have enough money to support me for a while as well as pay for the ticket and visa's i need.  Im looking for advice on what i need to go through w/o a fiance' or a spouse from England.
I am glad i found this site.  and Perhaps after me and my soon to be ex are done with i could visit the UK n browse the guys to find sombody to be with in hopes of being HAPPY for a change!!  :D

Welcome to UK Yankee.  Check out our visa boards, I think your best bets are most likely going to be either a student visa or a 6 month Bunac work visa if you are a recent college graduate. Good luck with your plans. Any reason why you picked Manchester? Have you been there before or have family from there?

i have *quote*"family"*unquote* from close to manchester.  I havn't gotten through college yet :(  I had to many problems with college in the US!  >:(  so i'd probably be getting a part-time job and sharing a flat w/ a flatmate.

*edit* also, thanks for the welcomes... :)

Like I said do check out our visa boards but just to let you know,  there is no working holiday type visa for US citizens other than the Bunac visa. To work here, you would need an employer to sponsor you which means they have to show there is no-one already here who can do the job.  I'm pretty sure the only other way (if you're not in a relationship with an EU citizen)  is to come on a student visa which allows you to work part time.  You mentioned you have family over here - are either of your parents GB or EU citizens? if so you might be able to get an EU passport which would give you the same rights as any other EU citizen, ie you wouldn't need a visa to live & work here.

Hi, welcome.

Might be a good idea to look into a student visa to come over.  Take a look around the Visa section.  Best of luck :)

I have *Quote*"family"*Unquote* (not a real relative but they a like a mum to me) over there... so that wouldn't count. She lives in Sale Mae i think... i can't think of it... i know its Sale somthing... near Manchester...

Welcome Vicks, and good luck with your plans.

Hope this doesn't hijack your welcome thread, but your post prompted a discussion between me and my (British) wife over lunch about the fact that some women do not consider British men to be a very good catch.  The stereotype is that British men can be lazy around the house.  If you watched Nanny 911 last night (I only saw the first couple of minutes) you saw an Englishman who is actually living out that stereotype, not lifting a finger to help with the children, spending his time out back with his pigeons.  I trust that as you look around, you will spot and avoid that type.

Jim

Shhhhh! Jim! That's a closely guarded secret! If we keep the stereotype alive then there will be less competition! Oh, what do I care, I got one of the good ones already!  ;)

I was born and raised in Allentown!!! '98 grad of Emmaus HS, parents live in Macungie.

I now live in Arlington, VA, but not for too long!

Just wanted to say - maybe even just get out of Allentown, it can be a depressing place to live if you're young and single. Might I suggest this area (DC) or maybe even somewhere like Charolette, N.C.? These places get more sun than the UK.

Good luck in whatever you decide :)

Very cool to meet sombody from around the area.  I live across the street from Bannana Joes (and over the Sterling Hotel's Rock Room) Thanks for the warning about the lazyness of some british men... haha but as you said only some are like that...so perhaps i'll find one that isn't...  :D I just wish i could find sombody that will appreciate me, for ME!!! and i can't find anybody in this crapy place!

Hello and welcome......I'm not too far from you in New York!!!!
I will be moving to Scotland around the end of July...

Your best  bet would be to  move over as a student.  I work for an international company so I can transfer that way...that might be an option for you too!!  Also in some cases there is a shortage of jobs (like the hospitality industry) and you can apply from the us after they have the job posted for 6 months.   Try going to www.workpermit.com
Good luck with everything !!!!! Keep us posted!!
