Elizabeth George's latest
« on: March 29, 2005, 03:11:35 PM »
Does anyone here read EG?  Has anyone read her latest?

Does anyone else want to discuss the disillusionment, disappointment, and soul-sucking depression it induced in them?

Because it sure ruined my day yesterday.  Quite possibly my week.  Quite possibly my enjoyment of the entire series.

Oh dear, now I'm worried.  I'm a huge EG fan, and have the latest on order at the library.  What was so bad about it?

Ooops.  I don't want to spoil it.  Suffice it to say that the "big shocking event" promised by the publishers in the book's jacket and all of the media is not a good event.

The mystery is quite good, though, and the climactic scene is her most exciting ever.  Even more than Barbara on the boat with the racist DCI  in "Deception on His Mind".

What's your favorite EG book so far?

I think I largely prefer the earlier books: Well-Schooled in Murder etc.  I really enjoyed Barbara's relationship with her mother and the impact that had on her development and, subsequently, her professional life.

Some of the later books have been very big (!) and I'm starting to wonder if EG is being paid by the word!  Traitor to Memory did absolutely nothing for me, and it was obvious to me who was the murderer very early on.  I didn't like A Place of Hiding much either - but I think that's because I can't stand Deb!

I was so looking forward to the new one....EG hasn't killed someone, has she?

I didn't like Traitor to Memory much either.  And does anybody like Deb??  I didn't read the last one, since it was all about Deb and Simon-who is mildly interesting, I guess, but the two of them don't exactly set any fires in my belly, if you know what I mean.  I just think Deb is kind of whiny and dull.  Helen is who I really like.

I think my favorite was "Deception...", but I also really liked "Missing Joseph" and "Proper Sinner."  Didn't care much for "Playing for the Ashes," though, which I know a lot of people adored.  "Elena" was kind of weak too.  And the one that takes place before the others, can't recall the name at the moment.  I know what you mean about Barbara's Mom, I liked those scenes too.
Is it just me, or is Barb starting to be a little silly?  Surely she would have pulled herself together a little bit by now.  It doesn't bother me that much, and I still really like her character-and she gets to really kick some behind in the newest one, which is GREAT.

I'm not going to tell you what happens unless you expressly say you want me to, but be warned.

Is it just EG that you like - or are you big mystery fan?

Is this 'With No One As Witness'? i've read lots of EG and usually like her. Now I'll have to get this one to see what all the excitement is all about... however, it looks like it's only been released in the US so far!

I am a big mystery/crime fan though have slacked off a bit lately. My problem is, though, that I've read SO MANY of them over the years I have a terrible time remembering authors and titles let alone recalling the plot of each one. This makes joining in a discussion about books difficult unless it's about the one I just read!

Will report back once I get my hands on it!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Oh, no! I love Elizabeth George too! I didn't know she even had a new one out. What's the name of the new one? Is it only in hardcover so far? I generally wait for paperbacks. I can't believe it's that depressing! Yeesh! I'm sure I'll still it read it, though.

Yes, that's the one.  It seems, now that I look it up, it won't be released until June in the UK.

Anybody want to borrow my copy?  I'll be happy to ship it out.

I checked out amazon.co.uk. You can preorder the hardcover book. But there are also some used paperbacks available in the UK -- for £8.75 and up. Still pretty pricey for a paperback!

 >:( Well, I've almost finished it and..what was EG thinking?  I can't believe what she's done and I have no idea how this will impact future books.  I'm shocked.

Am going to the book now though.  Perhaps the exciting end will redeem it slightly.

Now I'm REALLY intrigued! Might have to shell out for the expensive amazon.co.uk copy!

Finished it lat night and now I am even angrier  >:(!  As Saf says, the ending is EG's most exciting yet, but one principal character's recation to the "stunnning event" really disappoints me and leaves me wondering what will next ....and not in a good way  :-X

Reviving an old thread because I just finished this book.  EG is my favourite author and I was in tears at the end of this book.  It was exciting but so gut-wrenching.   :-\\\\
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…
