Where to start....?
« on: April 04, 2005, 05:47:33 AM »
I love my girl but she lives in the U.K we've been playing this game for the last year flying back and forth to the states and U.K separately.  She finishing up with her studies this year but plans to start her induction year for her trade is in teaching.  I have another year to go in order to finish my studies but I know that time is ticking.  She told me she would wait a nother year in order for all this stuff to settled or that I could just come over secretly and she would take care of me. Which I laughed at.....  So in anycase here's the deal I planning to visit in the end of May and I have 50 days to prepare.  Last minute stuff for she was just here 4 days ago and I just can't seem to live without her.  So I bought a ticket the next day and in hope I could look for work while I'm over there and so that's where I find the road block. Is it possible to find work with a visitors visa? or am I just screwed to have a nice vacation again and destined for a nother year of phone tag and emails.

Mark

I know this isn't the answer you want-- but unfortunately it is illegal look for work while over on a visitor's visa. Have you thought about school in the UK? Good Luck-- I know none of this is easy-- but there are ways.

ya it's just difficult school is just cheaper for me over here.  I wasn't planning for all of this and in fact we were just going to be friends then..... well where in love and have been worried about all the consequences of this love.  #1 being location.... she loves it out here in California but she feels she can make more as a teacher in the U.K. which I frankly agree with.

well if anything I got a year to prepare so if you guys got a check list of some sort or I guess I could just marry the girl we have spoke about it several time before it just that were not settled yet with our careers.  It like we are still dating but for 3 year now.

If we marry in the U.K do I need permission from immigration office?

Hey there ....I'm in your same boat!!

.....And it isn't an easy boat to be in. I found this out quickly when I thought that  I could just pack up and go.  Oh no no no , unfortunately. (unless you are very wealthy)

School of course is the easiest route.  Other then that it's very hard to get a  work visa being an American. British companies have to post the job for at least 6 months and if they can't find a Brit to fill it then they can look elsewhere.

If you have British ancestry, you can get over there that way.  There is also a fiance visa , but you can't work while over there on and you have to have a wedding set for 6 months down the road.

You can also try the highly skilled Migrant program, there is a calculator to see if you are eligible at www.workpermit.com

I am doing a lateral transfer with the company that I am working for now in New York. I am very lucky for this, but it is not as easy as I thought.  I am pretty much indebted to my company and if I leave them once I am over there then I have to come back to the US or find another company to sponsor a VISA for me!!

Good luck with everything and keep us updated. It is a long journey but I am sure that the outcome of being with your sweetie makes up for that  ;D

You can get a 6 month Bunac visa after you graduate which will allow you to work but when the 6 months is up you have to leave or find anothe rway to stay.

No.  You cannot look for work whilst visiting.  You cannot accept employment whilst visiting.  You cannot change a "visitors visa" to any other sort of visa.

If you have a  picture online all you have to do is 1. right click on the pic, 2. click on 'properties', 3. then copy the address from the part marked 'location', 4. then paste that address into the profile part that says 'I have my own picture'.

There is also a fiance visa , but you can't work while over there on and you have to have a wedding set for 6 months down the road.

Just wanted to clarify. You do not have to wait 6 months after you get your fiance visa. You have to be married within 6 months after you get the fiance visa. But to get married, you only have to reside in the UK for 7 days before giving notice, then wait 15 days before giving notice to get married.  So depending on how big your wedding is and how much planning time you are putting into it, you do not have to spend that much time on the fiance visa, unable to work.  Technically, you could get a fiance visa, move to the UK straight away, have a very small wedding 22 days later, then get a spousal visa which will allow you to work.

I am coming to the UK on a fiance visa and will only be there a little over 2 months before getting married. I worked at my job in the US till the end of March, and I'll probably be able to start looking for work in the UK by the end of June.

(P.S. I get confused about whether the residence requirement is 7 or 8 days, but the idea is the same.)

nice... we'll look into it not sure if were ready yet for marriage but at the same time we keep on seeing each other.  In fact she all ready plan to come back to the states in July so who knows maybe well just go to Veges and visit the chapel of love with Elvis.  I just know that I never have put this much effort to anything like this in my life.

Exactly....I have the same exact feelings, as much as I love Stephen , I feel that I am too young to jump into something as sacred as marriage.  Although it is almost as if  there are no other options ya know.  I thought about taking the Elvis route as well  [smiley=elvis.gif], and you never know we still may go for it!!!  I just would like to live together before taking the major plunge!!  I definately am greatful to my company, but it really didnt come easy as I had to do all the leg work myself and am putting up half the cost of my work permit.  Also  I still dont have a definate date when I am leaving so I feel like my life is on hold.  I seriously agree when you talk about putting effort into this whole thing!! My boyfriend and have been working on this matter non-stop for about 6 months  now and it finally coming all together.
