Visa/Work Question
« on: July 17, 2003, 05:49:42 PM »
Please forgive me if I've put this in the wrong place or its been asked over and over.

I will be getting a spouse visa in April.  Then moving asap to UK.  Will that stamp give me the right to work in the UK without my future boss having to pay for my work visa?  Does this make sense.  I was thinking that if someone has to pay a large amount for me to work for them then I would have a harder time finding work.

I didn't find the NY Embassy site all that easy to understand.  My FH and I will go over all the documents needs etc later this year and discuss it all.  But this question answered would help.  Thanks!

Yes, if you are coming over on a spouse visa which is known as a Further leave to remain/Entry Clearance Visa, you can work without a worry about a work permit.

If for instance you were coming over on a Fiancee visa, then you have to wait till you have your FLR to apply for work.

Hope this helps!!

Yes thanks Trish.  Thats been a big help.  Everything is so complicated!  Oh well.  It's worth it in the end.  One less thing I have to worry about now.

Its all good.  Until the next bump in the road anyway! lol

yes true if you have a flr visa your able to work but are not able to collect any benefits, i'm in same boat now i'm trying to find employment here in the uk but am not being very succesfull, you need a national insurance number but cant get one untill you find a job which is frustrating.
so until you are able to find a job you cant get a national insurance number, i was told at a job centre here that most employers wont look twice at a aplication/applicant if they dont have a national insurance number.

I would question that 9.  Any employer who is worth their beans would know that a temporary NI number can be generated with a person's birthday.  The way the picture has been painted to you is a whole chicken and egg thing: can't get an NI number without a job, can't get a job without an NI number.

Truth is, you CAN get a job without an NI number.  The employer should be able to generate a temporary number and once you are employed, you can phone up your SS office and get on the list for an appointment to apply.  I think the Job Centre people are pulling your leg.

true elle a employer can give a temporary national insurance number, but some employers wont accept a application or interview without one ( i seen it myself).
once someone gets a job/contract they than go get there permanent national insurance number from what i was told at the social security office earlier (friday afternoon) it takes about  6 weeks currently to get one, you go in fill in form prove who you are etc..
that 6 weeks may or may not be right where anyone else is but thats what i was told as a aproximate.

Maybe it's just the area you live in.  It wasn't really a problem for me.  I'd say that waiting times for applying for the number are also determined by your area as well.  I had to wait 13 weeks just to get an appointment to apply and then I waited another 4-6 weeks before actually getting the number.  But it worked out all right.  I'm sure it will for you too. :)

I was given my National Insurance number because I was able to prove how diligently I was looking for work.  It didn't take even a month, whole thing from call to appointment to getting the number in the mail.  And just got my "real" card in the post last week.

That said - the guy who did my interview did tell me that (in my area, at least) he had found that people looking for work WERE being discriminated against if they didn't have a NI number already.  So he told me that I should keep my "receipt" that I had applied to show prospective employers.  Got my number so quickly, it really wasn't a problem.

I think, like elle said, it's probably very regional what employers will and won't do.  I did think it was going to be very chicken-egg, too, but got lucky I guess!

Thank you all for helping me with this.  I have to say its been a real concern for me.  I don't want to get used to staying at home.  I need to work.  I also appreciate the extra info on the NI number/card.  I didn't realize that had anything to do with getting work at all.  Another surprise!  Woo hoo.  Kidding.

Sheesh I'm starting to get a bit overwhelmed with all the details.  Anyone got a scorecard?  My kingdom for an accurate scorecard?!

Thanks again.  I can always count on you all for help.  Its greatly appreciated.

fresh from yet another inetrview today, i was told i needed my marriage certificate!!!!!!
why you ask? to prove i am married they claimed, i pulled out my letter from the Home Ofiice i got with my flr approval, guess what very first line states?
answer- i'm married! (based on marriage to be exact)
i show my passport with my flr visa stamp, wasnt good enough for them.
I was than given the excuse my visa was about to expire!
my fiance visa expires on 27th, which is now null/void i have the flr for 2 years now.
oh and than the excuse became on the home office websie it states i need to show my marriage certificate to get a job, i have yet to find that (apperently the legal dept there thinks thats i was told).
my flr letter also states i'm free to work with no work permit, i see no mention of the marriage certificate rule anywhere or any special things i need to bring to a interview.
they did however give me a temp. national insurance number ( i called the social security office they stated no contract no #).
personally i think they are finding any excuse they can not to hire me.

I have no idea if it's true or not but that's certainly what it sounds like.  What a load of rubbish!  The job I have right now was probably the easiest job I have ever obtained in my life.  I walked in as a temp.  Two weeks later I was hired as a permanent employee.  No interview.  I think the agency probably faxed over my CV.  Don't know if my boss ever really looked it too closely or at all.  It's probably just in my folder.  I was hired based solely on the good job I was doing.  They never even asked to see my passport to check my visa (a bit unusual and probably not a recommended practice).

I know that the way I got a job is not going to necessarily be the way others will, but for certain I had my share of agencies before I got work and none of them ever gave me a hard time about any of the things you're getting hard times about.

Best of luck, hon and keep trying.  Something will come along eventually.

Wow 9iron, it sure sounds like you've had a rough time of it.  I'm sorry to hear this.  I think just based on your story I'll go prepared for anything.  Just in case.  Thanks to everyone for your help and experiences.

Brookstreet is the one who has worked the hardest for me.  What I have learned about agencies is that they can really vary.  I worked for Office Team, a division of Robert Half Int'l when I was in the US and was so excited to find out there was a branch in London.  Office Team had been very good to me.  The OT in London...not really.  They consistently blew me off and disappointed me.  I've had good experiences with Kelly Services.  Wench says the Kelly branch in her town sucketh big time.

I actually popped in to this Brookstreet on the way to apply at a Kelly office.  Kelly asked me to come back the following day.  Brookstreet was right next door and I wasn't planning on going there, but popped in and they were really nice.  The woman was on the phone before I even left trying to get me a job.

I felt very comfortable with the people in that office and when I was in the neighbourhood, I would pop in even though I was not looking for anything myself.  I've given them tip offs when our office might be in need of a temp or two or when a position might be opening up.  So I've developed a good relationship with them and now they know me well.  They may or may not work out that well for you.  Heck, maybe they're one of the agencies you've already tried.  But give'em a whirl if you haven't yet.
