cast iron cookware

Can I get Cast iron cookware in the UK or should I bring some with me?

You can buy it over here, and I have - working on seasoning it properly right now.  (Still I wouldn't give up my old stuff for the world -- hopefully I'll have it shipped out of storage along with other stuff later this year.)

It's actually even cheaper in France.  You can buy some amazing Le Crueset there.  Just depends on how attached to it you are and if you can justify the expense of shipping it.  I brought my pots and pans and things, but we shipped in a crate on a boat so had more leeway.

I saw an advert the other day, i think it was for a Debenhams sale... the advert showed some WHITE LeCreuset pans, and they were so gorgeous!!

I have a blue Le Crueset large casserole pot (dutch oven sized) and I love it more than I love my husband.   ;)

I don't like Le Creuset -- I find them even *heavier* than plain cast iron & seems with the enamel they would need more TLC than a good old black cast iron pot or pan.  My pans are at least 40 years old - LOL!

I also like the British equivalent of Calphalon -- I have gotten it as Meyer Anolon at Debenhams but v. expensive (compared the cheap cast iron).

I LOVE my Le Creuset iron grill pan.

Amazon.co.uk has brilliant sales on all kinds of cookware, including cast iron.  Got all mine from there at prices nearly similar to US ones.

I dont have any LeCreuset... i just think it's pretty.
I buy cheap-ish cookware from Ikea, because sometimes if a pan is really burnt or dirty or ultra-greasy, i would rather throw it away than clean it.  :-\\\\

Oh, no, otter!  If s/thing is really stuck on, throw a dishwasher tablet into it, then boil up some water in your kettle and pour it into the pan just on the boil.  Wait till it all cools down and whatever it is will usually come right off.

Le Crueset is gorgeous!  I'm partial to the original orange, however.

OMG i went hog wild....well, not really.  but i could have!

i got another small blue baking pan to match my long one.  i also got a bunch of the silicone baking stuff, muffin and cake bits...my mom loves them and no need to grease-they just pop out!

i spent 40 quid but could easily have spent 400.   :o

Very cool.  I have recently inherited 3 cast iron skillets that belonged to my husband's grandmother (and possibly her mother before her), and I am an absolute convert.  After reading about the effects of teflon, I'd been ready to throw out my old skillets (which tend to get scratched up a bit too easily), and these skillets have already been used for everything from roasting to pizzas.  I'm glad to see that cast iron's easily got back home.

Kaz - my cast iron skillets are like that!  From my grandmother (just passed away at 104 years ole) and my mom -- age 78.  I have 3 like that too plus a dutch oven.  Still in storage in FL, but hoping to get it over here in the summer.

There is something rather wonderful about cooking with familial ancestors, isn't there?  I can't imagine the average teflon pan lasting that well.  Plus I could knock out a burglar in seconds flat with even the 6" pan.  The Dutch oven my mother-in-law gave me is enormous, so doesn't get the use it should; the griddle gets broken out on a regular basis - my husband cooks (American) pancakes every weekend morning.

Yummm - American pancakes!  My Brit DH doesn't get that - IHOP, etc. ;D

Yes, I cook with my ancestors. ;)  My dutch oven is on the small/medium side 'cause we always took it camping with us in Colorado.

We do American pancakes on weekends and Real pancakes now and then  ;)  I have to say, his pancakes are famous amongst our friends.  One friend keeps threatening to turn up at random times and demand he cook them for her.  He pretends not to be flattered as hell.

For some reason, my mother-in-law thought we needed a huge one.  For just the two of us.
