American Cheese? Is it anywhere to be found?

I'm a chef.....I can live without Velveeta Cheese........but I really miss American Cheese. I beleive it is a mix of cheddar and Monserella........does anyone know for sure? Or know where I can get something similar to American Cheese (not the sandwich slices please).Thanks.......................................... ..........................Gail

I just bought some shredded cheddar and mozerella cheese from Tesco. Im not sure if thats what youre looking for.

American cheese is basically a young not-too-ripe cheddar -- with a lot of chemicals and colourings added. You can probably buy a mild cheddar and it would taste more or less the same (better if anything without all the additives!).

You can get fat free and low fat cheddars here... though it depends on exactly where you live. 

I never knew American cheese came in a block -except those round ones in the deli.... It's basically processed cheese isn't? 

i buy the dariylea light slices for grilled cheese and yeah, they melt and yeah....they are pretty good!  Not the same, but a decent substitute!

Basically, yes. It has all sorts of emulsifiers and things in it to give it that smooth, uncheesy like texture. Gimme a good mature farmhouse cheddar any day! Or else maybe some extra-creamy & fatty brie!

Aaaaaw ... but I used to get some really good cheeses in the US! Vermont cheddars are delish! And I was always able to get good imported British, French and Italian cheese as well.

I love cheese, too.

I really miss the HUGE variety of quality cheeses in the UK.  Over here, these less choice at the grocery store; you have to search a bit to find your favourite varieties.  I've noticed that there's a fair amount of French Bries and Camemberts, but not the fabulous variety of Cheddars, Gloucesters or other European cheeses.

I've kind of found it to be the opposite! Yes, there's a HUGE variety of British cheese to be found here and I adore that! But there's hardly any choice when it comes to cheeses from other countries, even those in Europe. Besides brie, cambembert and a couple of basic Italian cheese, that's it. I'm used to having giant Italian delis with like 100 of different kinds of cheese to choose from!
