American Cheese? Is it anywhere to be found?

Really?  Were you in New York?  Maybe I'm not looking in the right areas, or the Chicago suburbs do not contain enough cheese-junkies?  I have yet to find Spanish Manchengo over here!

No, I was in Providence which has a big Italian population -- hence the Italian delis. I guess it depends on the ethnic makeup of your city. We also had really good Portuguese restaurants. Not sure about Spanish cheeses, though. Sorry!

I absolutely LOVE the cheese in England. It has so much more flavor than the cheddar I find here (DC). Then again, i won't pay for much more than Kraft or the store brand. I love what my brit bf buys, I eat less of it b/c it's that satisfying in taste.

Yes it melts but not quite as nicely as regular if you're doing cheese dips or something along that nature. I used it mainly for omelets and on taco salads. Cheese is one of my favorite foods but I very rarely eat full-fat cheese. I do use the Dairy-Lea light slices for sandwiches but you can't grate that and half-fat cheese is still too high in calories and fat for my liking. Where can you get fat-free cheese here? I've not seen any yet.

Lol, I can almost see the cheese connoisseurs out there writhing in agony as I talk about fat-free cheese. Don't get me wrong, I love a really good cheese on a special occasion but for normal daily use I just prefer fat-free.

Coem to think of it.. the only really fat free or virtually fat free things I have seen are quark and the like.  Tesco makes a "Heathly Alternative to Cheese" that has been shown to reduce cholesterol, and the carry Heinz 3% Fat Weight Watchers Mature Cheddar which might be as low fat as you can get.  I suppose you can also try alternative cheese products like Cheezly which will have fat, but not the same types of fat. And yes I am writhing in agony...  
Most of that stuff tastes like cardboard.  Just remember that 1 oz of cheese is a serving and is safe for daily use.    

Besides which I'd argue the benefits of eating  real food over processed fake stuff any day. I however will respect your decision.  

This may be no help... But I know you get American cheese in the hoagies at Subway. I asked the first time I went to the UK one. Maybe they can tell you where they get it.

Dominos is coming out with a new pizza next week - the Cheese Steak. It has american cheese on it in place of pizza sauce, with motz, "steak" green peppers, onions & mushrooms. I've tried it without the steak and I will say the taste I noticed most was the american cheese flavour.  If you are missing that taste, pick one up.

My local Sainsburys and Tesco used to supply Kraft American cheese.  Sainsburys has stopped, though the last time I was in the cheese isle of Tesco, they still had it.

How is the american cheese packaged. Is it in the slices? I hve see that. I am interested in knowing if cheese by the block (for melting) is available?
I would like to make some mac and cheese. Any info would be great thank you.
