About home equity loan
« on: April 12, 2005, 12:11:57 PM »
Hi...this is not a post about taxes, but I didn't know where else to pose a question relating to banking/money. I own my home in the US (it is paid off) and am living here in the UK with my husband who owns a home here (mostly still owned by the mortgage company) and we are looking to get into a larger home. I am renting out my home in the US and would like to take out a sizable equity loan for a good-size down payment on a home here. Do I contact my bank back in the US and go with a loan through them or do I look for a company here? I am not sure as the property is in the US...any ideas? Thanks!!!

I don't think you'll be able to get a UK mortgage/loan against you home in the US.  You'll most likely need to raise the mortgage/loan in the US.  It's great that you currently have tenants!   :)

However, you'll be best to speak to your bank or mortgage broker who will be able to discuss all of your options.

Good luck and do let us know what you find out.

Thanks...I figured I would have to go with a US bank, but wondered if anyone knew what the procedure is on using equity in a "foreign" home. I'm going back the first part of June for my son's high school graduation so want to get all the prelims out of the way before then.
