On my travels again!

Wonder if anyone can place this historic spot

Pictures taken this afternoon; I'm working in a less draughty office nearby.

Looks Scottish.

Is it that Scottish place where they filmed the scene with the French soldier from Monty Python's Holy Grail?

No clue, beautiful though, and I agree with Daver; it does look Scottish.

Ditto... Ahem, does look a bit Scottish though. :)

To answer my own question:  no it is not.  That would be Doune Castle.

So, then, is it Hermitage Castle?

Yes, folks, its VERY Scots - very much involved in Scottish history.  But I don't see the name of the place anywhere in the thread yet  ;)

It's the ruin of Linlithgow PALACE (yes, fortified as a castle) - about 15 to 20 miles to the West of Edinburgh and a few miles from the Forth Bridges.   Very much steeped in Scots history; very closely associated with Mary, Queen of Scots (her birthplacve, I believe) who is a direct ancestor of our current queen ... a fact proudly displayed on a series of plaques displayed up the cobbled hill to the palace gates.

Linlithgow town centre is a bustling old place close by the Palace, with a famous pub with a unique (?) name - "The Four Marys".

"Mary Hamilton was supposedly one of the "four Marys"who were ladies-in-waiting to the "fifth Mary," Mary, Queen of Scots. However, the name of Mary Hamilton does not appear in any official records of the time. The Marys that attended the Queen in France were Seaton, Beaton and Livingston" . The whole story and the folk song (which Joan Baez recorded many years ago, are told on:

My husband and I had a trip up to Scotland last Sept and stayed in a wonderful B&B called Strawberry Bank House (http://www.strawberrybank-scotland.co.uk/main.htm) in Linlithgow! My only regret is that we stayed in the Edinburgh area for only the last day of our trip! Very much looking forward to visiting it again when Wishstar and Nibbles move to the area, though!

The Four Mary's pub was lovely- we had to wait a few minutes but it was worth the wait. Great atmosphere, really nice food. Would definitely recommend the area and the pub!

For a great book on Mary, Queen of Scots I'd recommend

My Heart is My Own: The life of Mary, Queen of Scots by John Guy. Wow, that area is just oooozing with history! Thanks for sharing the gorgeous photos, Graham!
