Church & Religion
« on: April 18, 2005, 11:23:47 PM »
Im curious to hear a bit about Church & Religion in England. Do you go to church on a regular basis? Are you apart of the church community? How do you practice spirituality?

Looking forward to hearing your responses!

Well I come from a Jewish background but my sons go to a Catholic school and I'm a practicing spiritualist. Guess we are a mixed bag.
At Christmastime we put up a tree as well as a Menorah. ;)

I'm renting from a pastor and his wife, plus the youth minister lives here too, so I some how ended up very involved in a church. I go every Sunday morning, help out with the youth group most Sunday nights, and help with a kids club on Thursday nights. I really didn't plan on being so involved in church here, but the youth group was desperate for female leaders.

I've always been fairly involved in church--my dad was a pastor for the first 13 years of my life! For the last couple of years I've kind of pushed away all the religion/church/God stuff, but since I've been here I've completly changed.

I am a cradle catholic. I go to church every weekend.. but I have found the style  of worship here  to  be  a lot stiffer and duller than I  like.. It's funny because when I was in the states.. I thought it was  a bit   too  'happy clappy'  and touchy feely..yet now I am  dying for some  peppy music and  some interacting  with the parishoners.. I love to sing at mass yet I was shocked that  the songs we sing.. the ones i recognize  I knew  as  a child!!  haven't seen those songs  in over 20 years!! ::)

Nope.  We're total heathens.

Well...I grew up the granddaughter of a Methodist minister and used to work at an Episcopalian school...but here I've stopped going to church.  I guess some of it comes from dating a Hindi guy!  And going regularly to parties on Saturday night with either the hockey club or cricket club!

I attend Anglican churches.... C of E when i was in England, and the Scottish Episcopal Church here.   I cant say i attend regularly... maybe once a month or so.
I always go to the early morning 'spoken' (rather than 'sung') Eucharist.  It's very quiet and makes it easy to focus.
I enjoy it, and it makes me feel good when i do go.  :)

I'm an atheist (daughter of a non-practicing episcopalian and a non-practicing muslim), so don't attend any church services at all and never have. However, since moving here I have become involved in the Church Restoration Fund. Our local village church is a beautiful old Norman church and is badly in need of repairs. Last year, we raised funds to repair the tower, and this year the project is resealing the stained glass windows. I'm all for preserving this lovely little piece of history, and don't see it at odds with my (non-)religious beliefs.

I'm an atheist. My dad was brought up a Muslim but gave up on religion a looooooooooooooong time ago. My mum is CofE although she technically converted to Islam to marry my dad.  She used to take me to church & sunday school when I was little - til I was about 6 anyway.  My husband's a Lutheran and is worried I'm going to hell when I die! He's been to church only a couple of times since moving here although now we are moving to a smaller city he might start going more regularly.

Hmmm... sounds like we have similar backgrounds, Britwife! Except that my mom didn't convert to marry my dad. They had a heathen registry office wedding. Where is your dad from?

DH is Baptist, so he and I go to All Soul's Church (Church of England) in Langham place here in london.  It's a nice mix and we usually go a fwe times a month.  DH's dad sings in the choir, and i sing with them for holidays.

Well, I was raised Baptist, but I hated every second of it and always hid in the bathroom during Sunday School.   ;D  DH's family was kind of Catholic, but they didn't practice, so he says he has no religion.  As a result, we don't go to church unless we have to (last time we went was July last year when we were visiting my family.  Needless to say, DH was shocked at how closely intertwined politics and religion were in that small NC church -- the preacher was talking about the president and troops and war, etc., etc., etc.).  When/if we have kids, I think I'll expose them to religion and let them make up their own minds.

I'm agnostic. My husband is athiest. I was baptised Methodist but raised in a Mormon society and when I was young I insisted on going to church and learning all the religions around me.  Nowadays I never go to church but am happy enough to discuss it with anyone.
