« on: April 21, 2005, 11:04:20 PM »
I just have a question.. earlier I mentioned peanut butter & jelly sandwiches to my english boyfriend and he said it sounded "bloody horrible", among other things.. is this unheard of being eaten in the UK? lol, just wanna know  :)  I told him that a lot of kids eat it and I dont eat it that often but hey when its all you can afford why not? lol but really I just wanna know if pb&j is popular in the UK.. or not..

When you speak of 'jelly' in the UK, you're normally speaking about what we would refer to as 'jello'.  Perhaps that's why he was so taken aback?

I don't think it's as popular here - no.  (I could be wrong.) My DH hates the thought of it -- but he hates peanut butter in general (some kid taunted & grossed him out with peanut butter back in primary school).  I know this has been a thing from some of the yanks moving over here -- stocking up on their peanut butter supplies to bring over to the UK. You can buy peanut butter here, but if you're stuck on a specific US brand -- you might not be able to find it here.

I've gotten Paul into HOMEMADE Huckleberry jam and PB sandwhiches.  Sometimes, we'll use tortillas instead of bread.  He loves it.  Boy--he's really going to fit in America when the move is completed next week!

I am a HUGE peanut butter fan and DH can't stand the thought of it. He thinks I am mad to even consider eating a PB&J, which I think is the perfect snack. He does not even like peanut butter cookies or candy (Reeses etc). <sigh> I plan on bringing some with me when I come.

You can buy Skippy here at Sainsburys.  I've converted to an organic and less oil/sugar brand which is much better.  Still have to have my Welch's tho.

I did see Skippy when I was there but I think I am going to buy one of those industrial sized tubs at Costco. :)

OH and for you Reeses fans......they just came out with a limited edition "Peanut Butter Lovers" version. Chocolate cup bottom, PB center, and then more peanut butter on top. Delish! :)

My bf thought I was nuts to put grape jelly & peanut butter together on a sandwhich.  Haven't purchased the grape jelly yet but I will and show him how good it all is!

I was brought up in the UK and had never heard of anyone combining peanut butter and jelly (jam, whatever). In fact, I'd only encountered peanut butter once and it was seen as very exotic! This was back in the '60s. We moved to Canada when I was 8, and the first time I was offered a PB&J sandwich, I nearly gagged. I've never been able to get over it and to this day it repulses me. Makes no sense to put those two things together! Bleaaaaggggh!   [smiley=puke.gif]

No it's not really a big thing here and personally it wouldn't be my first choice of sandwich filling .. but no worse that some other stuff people have been known to put in a sandwich (shrimp paste anyone? blecuh).

I'm allergic to shrimp, but fish paste sandwiches?!? YUM!!! I mean, it's really not too different from a tuna sandwich, right?

We do the same thing... we are addicted to Natures Own Brand I think it's called.  I made the mistake of ordering Smuckers Grape (a brand I like in the USA for some things) and I threw the whole thing out.  After not eating store bought grape for donkey's years ...it was like eating the grossest fake sugar.

I normally stick to Bonne Maman or my mothers homemade jams and jellys.  I've asked her to do concord grape ones this year.....  yummy.... yummy...  she almost never adds pectin.  Just fruit and sugar...slowly cooked down... it's so so so good!

Makes great cookies too!

I LOVE PB&J!!!!  It's just one of those things we grow up loving in the US!!!  (Maybe not  all of us)  Richard made one of his famous faces at me when I made one, but secretly I think he like it!  I like mine with Strawberry Jam.  And is I am really hungry, I make a triple decker ;D  I learned that in camp!!!
