The headaches are probably caused from caffeine withdrawl. I've been drinking reg coffee for over 20 years and when I switched to decaf I was absolutely fine.  My mother on the other hand had horrible headaches when she switched.

I agree, Pebs, the headaches are definitely withdrawals. After those pass, I know you'd feel 100% better being off the caffeine.

Then depending on where you look there are 'dangers' associated with drinking decaf too. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that everything causes cancer & is going to kill you in one way, shape or form. We've all got to die of something -- I'd rather have my vices (coffee, alcohol, etc etc) in the meantime & enjoy life.

That said, my gran lived to be 104 yrs old -- her favorite & regular (nearly every day) breakfast? Black caffeinated coffee, streaky bacon & biscuits (US southern style)! Not exactly 'health food' - huh? ???  Honestly, when I look at her life & the things she did, etc...I'd be more concerned about all the unnatural foods available today -- meaning all the processed, additive-enhanced stuff -- not the plain stuff available from nature that people have eaten for centuries. The closer you can get to the farm in the food chain - the better off you'll be. The other modern problem (and blessing) is that we simply have too much food on offer in the developed world -- vs the occasional scarcity experienced by ancestors.  We've lost the plot on the concept of moderation & self-control. :P  (As I sling back my vodka in cran...) [smiley=laugh4.gif]  not really...at least not at this hour

The best way to go from caffeine to decaf if you get headaches is to do it over the course of several days.  Mix regular and decaf, starting with a 3-1 (reg-decaf) mix.  Gradually add more decaf and less regular until you're just drinking decaf.  Makes the headaches almost nonexistant.  Works well for switching to lower fat milks, too.

I find I get headaches if I start a diet and have to wean myself off sugar! To fix that, I either eat a teaspoon of honey, or else have an orange. Seems to do the trick.

Hmm, Could be sugar too!  But I don't know, since I cut them both out cold turkey!

Funny last time I got off caffeine I did it slowly, I didn't think about it this time!  Oh well.

Sorry, Cassandra, but I have to disagree. I think caffeine is one of the worst things you can put into your body. :(

You - disagree that I couldn't do a diet like that?  Trust me on that one, sugar.  ;)

I know it's not the greatest thing in the world - but I make a point not to overdo it.  Everything in moderation, eh?

OK, so I have been having headaches everyday for almost 2 weeks now and yesterday a migraine!  Is that normal?  Shouldn't I be over them already!?

Unless you were seriously into caffiene, I'd say no.  Are you drinking enough water?  Are you sure you're eating enough?  Make sure you load up on the good carbs in beans and nuts -- I've found they helped with dizziness and headaches.

I'm drowning I drink so much water!  I was only a one to 2 cup of coffee a day gal, and almost never had soda.  I eat nuts a lot, will have more beans though.

Hmmmmmmm.

According to Atkins, caffeine stimulates the pancreas and something happens to your insulin production that makes it difficult to lose weight.  I remember reading that when my Brit Husband went on Atkins a year or so ago.  He's been decaf ever since!

I was very successful on Atkins a few years ago and had just regular diet pop. I only read recently with SBD you should drink decaf. Guess it all depends on the individual.

everything in moderation. If i'm not working, most of the time I don't even notice I haven't had any tea or diet coke, but there are the days when it's better to drink that than have what I'm really craving - like a sugary, processed mess of some carbohydrates. I never crave vegetables, wonder why?? Anyway, I've been told too much caffeine can actually INCREASE your appetite. I have to admit, if I have too much, I get thirstier and crave cr*p foods. Otherwise, my cup of tea in the morning is supposed to actually help prevent cancer and it helps me w/ a small wake up boost that I need. SBD is more balanced than atkins, but ww is still the one w/ the most options imho (and I've always lost weight when I do it right).
