Broadband Providers
« on: April 27, 2005, 03:49:14 PM »
OK, we moved nearly a month ago and told AOL at least a couple of weeks before moving that we were going to be. We didn't even change phone numbers. And we still have no broadband. And everytime we call we either get someone who is struggling to understand our accents and vice versa or we're told that they're computers are down so they can't check on our account. The most recent excuse was that they had to close down our old address before placing the order for our new address - so it's taken nearly six weeks just to close the old one and the new one has only just been ordered. Cool.

To say the least, we've had it.

Apparently our phone line can only handle 1MB which is fine. And a few of them don't service our area (Telewest, UK Internet, and I think Tiscali.) We're thinking of using BT as they have relatively competitive pricing and could get us up and running pretty quickly. But I just thought I'd see if anyone had any other suggestions before we tell AOL to stuff it (which I'm greatly looking forward to.)

We have BT,  No complaints or problems at all!!!  I think if you do it through a friend you get vouchers or something too.

Tell AOL to stuff it. NTL is great for broadband if it is in your area. A lot of other providers use BT's structure, so you may as well go with BT if they are the only other option.

I really feel for because we had the EXACT same problem with AOL when we moved! Always getting someone who kept giving us different reasons as to why we still had to pay for broadband and yet remain on dialup because SOMEBODY didnt show the fact we was moving and said it would take another two weeks to fix it all. All I can say is it was a nightmare to deal with them, in fact we pretty much hate them and are still thinking of switching ourselves. . You might speak to someone with a English name but apparently most of the time you get the call centre from India Im told and no one seems to know what's going on until you keep calling and manage to get the one in Ireland I believe its located and well until you do I wouldnt hold out much hope. It's simply not worth it with AOL.

Hiya
I use Virgin Net for my broadband.. you have to have a BT line though.. Thing i like about Virgin Broadband is that there is no 12 month contract.. Its monthly.. so if you are unhappy and want to leave them its only a month that you'd be out.
I've not had any problems at all with Virgin Net..

We had Virgin for dial up accounts ages ago.  They were always a good company.

These days we have NTL and for the most part it's been pretty good.  Still waiting for my free 2MBit upgrade tho.

Yeah, but we were the £24.99/month customers on the original 750Mb service.  They've since given you more speed for the same price (we should be at 2Mb).

NO BT -- SAVE YOURSELF!!  DON'T DO IT!

Check Which? online. (www.which.net) They've got ratings for the best broadband.  You can sign up for a free 30day online trial and get access to EVERYTHING.  It's similar to Consumer reports.

Yes, if you use the link above you will go to the upgrade page that does that for you, gives you the faster speed for the same price. That's why I linked it for you.

I guess I'm in the minority. I have a BT line and use AOL for my broadband. I've been very happy with both. And my monthly rates have actually dropped since I signed up.

We have BT broadband and had a BIG problem with them disconnecting us and not telling us why - it turned out they had detected a virus but it took us a week to find this out. They gave us 3 months free for that but I think we are switching to NTL when our contract is up.

I've heard some good things from Pipex because they never require any contracts, which can be useful in the Broadband area!  They're prices are ok, I think £19.99 for 512K, not the worst not the best.

I've seen ads for ukonline.net which promote £9.99 512k broadband, however when I went on their website it
says that price isn't available in my area and that I'd have to pay £19.99.  Still, you never know, Anne, they might be setup in Gerrard's X for the £9.99 deal, can't really beat that price for broadband.

I use Tiscali and apart from a change of billing amount (they lowered the 512k price) which took me a couple of weeks to get sorted the service has been really good.
