UKY Sister Site: Brits in USA?
« on: April 27, 2005, 10:12:04 PM »
Hi there!  Well, it is now official.  I picked up my Brit-half at the airport yesterday, and now he is faced with learning all things American.

Knowing how much this forum has helped me while I was living abroad, I thought it would be great to find a similar site for Paul to browse on this side of the pond.  The few I've found are very slow...and not nearly as freindly as this lot.

Can someone recommend a site like this, or just a good site for Brits in the States?

Thanks!
Frances

One of the members from here, started the site "Dive into America",  http://forum.diveintoamerica.com/

The couple who started it are a British hubby and American wife. You may remember Marsbar,, it's her and her hubby. They are settleing in nicely there, and are a great source of support and help in the transition of being a Brit in America ;)

My current brit bf has been considering our future in america - the thought makes me happy, but then I get nervous for him to go through what I'm about to go thru w/ culture shock. Keep us up to date on how your brit man is doing with the new surroundings :)

This site is relevant for both Brits and Americans.  Discussions there include many aspects of settling in as well visa questions.

As an aside, I think my Brit DH actually likes the US more than I do!  :-\\\\  But then, he worked in the US in the mid 90's so came back here knowing exactly what it was like....

I read some of the things on the site and it makes me sad to think what my brit might have to give up in order to live here. I don't know if I like that. I know I am giving up some things to live there, but the thought of him losing some of the things like pubs, driving fast and some of his accent just makes me sad. Maybe I need to read more and see what positive things the brits enjoy about moving here.

It's six of one, and half a dozen of another.  Everybody's circumstances are different; just follow your instincts and you'll probably make the right choice for the two of you.   ;)

Thanks for the suggestions.  I've seen both of them, and am in fact registered on Sarah's site--but can not remember my password and my email address in not "recongnized" to get a new password sent.  Guess I'll have to create a new account!!

Thanks again!
Frances
