I haven't found that at all  ???

Depends where you go Barnados or Age Concern on the high road sometimes get's cheeky and prices things more than it would be if it was off the retailer. Oxfam on Hampstead the same. I saw a nice Zara trenchcoat (not new ) and they wanted £30  :-[ The North London Hospice had brand new Docs (child size)  for £1

If you'd go back to America and take all the american culture, language, issues, and innovation away with you, i would be one very happy camper!   ;)

Most of the American culture , language , issues and innovations where derived from European ones ....copycats! ;D

I thought she meant charity shops, which confused me. Thanks, Mindy.

I spend a LOT of time waiting for teenagers in those sorts of shops, so I knew exactly what she meant.   ;)

I've only had one "run in" with a guy. In fairness to him, he didn't like anyone. It was at a club and I think he was high or something and he just started talking to me about how he doesn't like people from Pakistan and black people. I commented that they've done me no harm and therefore I have no opinion and he just stared at me for a bit, said "you're American", gave me a dirty look, spat on the ground and walked away.

Oh well, you can't be friends with everyone!  ::)

I've been here for a couple of weeks, and my major complaint so far is how out of place I feel.  .....also how I'm looked at like a circus freak and I get odd comments about me being American that makes me very uncomfortable.  My boyfriend (english) keeps telling me that its more anti-bush than anti-american, but it's not my fault we have an idiot president...LOL.  I feel as if people are quick to judge me becuase of their opinions about our president....  I'm not going to tell every person I come in contact with "Oh, yea....by the way, I didn't vote for him, so feel free to bash."

It does help a little bit when I go out dressed in something from NEXT or FCUK as well as keeping my voice to myself.  But, I hate feeling like I have to hide who I am so I don't get stared at.  I hate not being able to wear flip flops, my ripped up american eagle jeans and a aeropostale tank top.  And by trying to fit in I feel like subconciously I'm ashamed of where I come from-- which I'm not.  When my boyfriend comes to visit me in the states his clothes don't look weird or offensive, and he only gets the "cute accent" comment once in a while.  Maybe it's because we're much more accustomed to a greater field of diversity in the states.  ::Sigh::  I dunno....  just the vibes I get from people here lead me to believe that there is a bit of "anti-americanism" per say.  It may also be in the small town I am staying in because I don't get it as much in the city.   :-\\\\

I think it's generally a small town thing anywhere...even in the US...I grew up in small town Pa and believe me, any difference was stared at or talked about.  So I think it's just what happens.  Many people who come over get some shtick at first (in some areas), but once people get used to you, it won't happen as much.  Be who you are...eventually it shouldn't be a problem.

It may also be the part of the country you're in as well. I'm in a tiny village, and I live in flipflops in the summer as do most people here. Your ripped jeans and tank top wouldn't look out of place in the least. I guess it's like the US -- there are different "uniforms" for different parts of the country, regardless of town/city size.

But I agree with Onetiger. Dress the way that you feel comfortable!

It might be a small town thing, although my fiance and I have eaten and shopped at small towns in Yorkshire and I haven't heard any comments. It could be different if you live there, though.
