British Weddings ... Oh what to wear?
« on: May 10, 2005, 11:56:53 PM »
I'm going to be attending my first British wedding in November ... my husband's nephew's.  What is considered proper attire?  Is it is OK to wear black?

I JUST went  to my 1st English wedding and I was  very nervous.. had no idea  what to expect.  I debated the whole hat thing for a while and decided not to  get one.. I was  fortunate and quite surprised to see there were  only 6 hats worn..  wow! even DH was  surprised.. he says it's pretty traditional  so  maybe it's falling out of fashion in that circle of people..    I gave my DH  choices of what I wanted to wear. I asked him to be brutally honest and  I ended up wearing what he  said would be OK.. I would have never thought to wear black, but he said people do it.. I don't think anyone at this wedding wore all black that I can remember.

I would think it might depend more on the style of the wedding - i.e., time of day, time of year, theme, etc ?  I went to one English wedding last year (other than my own) -- it was multicultural though with the bride being Indian & the groom white English...so there were lots of saris, etc but I don't remember too many hats. I wore a nice skirt & lacy top with a jacket, but I felt overdressed as it turned out! Most of the young, non-Indian females there wore flowery sundresses & strappy sandals (the weddng was in late June). I think there must be just as much variety here as there is in the States, perhaps even more so?

I've been to several UK weddings. You'll always fit in if you wear a suit (skirt or pants) and a hat. Round these parts that seems to be standard wedding attire. I've also worn a dress, and looked fine. But ALWAYS a hat!!

I've been to several over here and worn everything from pant suit to litte black dress, but never a hat.  I look hideous in hats though.  No one has ever said anything about it or pointed and laughed at my lack of headgear.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your input! I'm so relieved about the hat business ... I only wear baseball caps ;D  I'll stick with my little black dress!
