Nearly a year old and still no textured foods!
« on: May 15, 2005, 07:08:05 PM »
Jack Jack is a nutcase! He STILL refuses to eat anything chunky or even with the smallest bits of texture in his food. I am still feeding him pureed food and baby cereal. I can make this stuff as thick as paste and he eats it but if there is a bit of texture in it he freaks out and gags till he throws up. I tried tonight again with the tiniest tiniest bit of mashed potato. I thought for a min he would choke. My GP said not to worry about it and it will come in time but WHEN?
My other sons were slow at taking textured food also but surely by a year old they were gnawing on pizza! Jack wont even take a graham cracker! Anyone else have this?

Yep!  Still fighting this battle on many fronts.  Disliking texture has subsided a bit, but now we are on to the stage where unless dinner food is covered in sauce (preferably tomato), he doesn't want to eat it.  It's a fight every night to get him to eat things like plain veggies and meat.  However, if I'm serving a pasta dish covered in sauce, he shovels it in like there's no tomorrow.

Picky eaters!  ::)

Yes, my son was the same way, and I still have problems sometimes...he's two on wednesday. I've found it just depends on how hungry he is, and whether I'm trying to feed him at his meal time, or just letting him pick off my plate. It depends on his mood as well, sometimes he'll take bites of chicken or veggies, or pasta, other times he'll spit them out because they are not soft and mushy. One thing he does like is crepes, and I can fill them with whatever, and I know he's getting the nurtrition he needs. I was actually thinking of starting another thread on this, first foods, what recipes you all use for your babies/toddlers, and what their favorite foods are. My son loves baked beans, but I blend them first, and he will eat them with fish fingers, or roasted parsnips, also I've found that if I dunk bread in just about anything, providing it has sauce, I can get him to eat the other bits as well.

Ah, the bread dunking.  Boyo usually has toast and fruit for breakfast, but at times he doesn't finish his toast.  Put a bowel of yoghurt in front of him and he'll dunk the bread and want more!

My third son Coby used to live on blended up baked beans! His absolute favorite food.
My birthday on Wed too by the way :)

I'm intrigued about this as there's seems to be more boys at the clinic with picky eating habits.
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

Hmmmm.  Slow to stand, a drool monster, doesn't like solids.  Has he had many ear infections?  How's his hearing?  Just wondering because #3 was like htat and had enlarged adnoids and glue ear.  She used to choke on anything larger than a pea.  The HV said it was behavioral, my Mom thought it was physical.  Might be worth checking out.

Weird that you mention this because just yesterday I noticed Jack pulling at his right ear. He has an appt with HV on Tues.
I do know he passed his newborn hearing test and he seems to respond to anything. You cant even tiptoe in his room at night without him popping up to look at you. But its an iteresting theory. Im going to speak to the HV and GP about it.
Thanks for that!

What about those kids on House of Tiny Tearaways (TV programme)?!!!
One is 5 years old and wont feed himself (will eat anything, but it has to be hand-fed to him by the parents), and the other is 2-and a half, and will only eat pureed foods.
If you havent watched that programme, perhaps have a look and see if they have any useful advice?

I was thinking the same thing--- I do think there is some useful advice, mainly allowing kids to explore and experiment food in a fun stress-free environment. Taking the stress over whether they will eat it or not...just let them explore and get used to textures, with you and the other kids joining in the fun and taking licks here and there.

I've been watching and they've suggested  combining a known favorite and introducing the new food with it in order to associate the new food. So for every time they munch on the new food they get a bit of their favorite....have you noticed as well the trouble tots are also boys there as well.

My 18 year old was just the opposite...couldn't stand pureed food...so baby food was out of the question. If it didn't have chunks he wanted nothing to do with it. And guess what? He never grew out of that. :-\\\\ To this day he won't eat anything mushy....not even chocolate pudding. No mayo, no mustard, no ketchup, no sour cream. And he still orders his hamburgers plain and dry. He is the pickiest eater I've ever come across in my life. His future wife's going to have fun cooking for him. ::)

My two year old is up and down on the eating as well. I have been watching Tiny Tear-aways avidly. Xan zeems to be a bit better, though he would eat cheerios and raisins and drink nothing but milk if I allowed it. I don't mind that he dislikes juice, as it's better for his teeth, but I would prefer he eat something other than squirrel food.  ;)

I made him French Toast, and he absolutely loves it, as well as eating with his Big Boy fork, now if he will just eat the yogurt.
I also mae headyway this weekend, making him chicken and roast potato, and he ate a little, but he gouged it with his fork (which he already holds properly without our help) and we cheered for him. I hate to make it seem like a game, but at this point, I am happy that he is eating. You would never know that he does not eat by looking at him, he is a well built hardy lad.

When he was a baby, he would eat anything, I used to go to Creche and feed him his lunch, then after he was a year old, I didn't do it anymore, as I thought he could take example from the others. It's just one step at a time, and the main thing is to not show how anxious you are. They seem to chill out a bit more, then. He may never be a member of the clean plate club, but, I don't sweat it, anymore. I don't think it is necessary for him or any of the kids to clean their plates anymore, as long as they eat til they are satisfied, but there are no afters unless the plate is clean.
