BUNAC and student visa

Hi everyone. I've just applied to BUNAC to spend 6 months working in the UK and also to check out the universities since I wish to study a Masters in Journalism. I figured that I could get to know my way around London before I took the leap to actually apply to a university and save some money in the meanwhile. My question is: can I apply for a student visa while working in the UK with the BUNAC program? Do I have to go back to the States and then apply for a student visa?
