I stayed at Ees Wyke Country House in Sawrey in the Lake District. It was so lovely! It the summer home of Beatrix Potter's family when she was growing up. And it's also within easy walking distance of Hilltop Farm -- her house that's open to the public. If you're into that sort of thing.

That's exactly the kind of thing we're into!  (we did visit there)

Can I say I second Oban? It's right on the ocean and it's stunning! I've stayed overnight there twice.

There's even a folly on top of a huge hill that with such a beautiful view I can't even describe it. That pic above shows the view. ^^^

I hear the Isle of Skye is fabulous too, if you're up for going waaaaaay up north, as well as Orkney which has some interesting ancient stone arrangements like Stonehenge.

Plans on hold 'cuz Brexit

If they like history, while you're in the Edinburgh area, you could try Linlithgow...  It's the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, and there's a lovely loch, a picturesque canal, a ruined palace, and a high street full of unique shops and good pubs.

There are some fantastic places on the way to Edinburgh - North-east coast - Lindesfarne, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Alnwick, Warksworth.

In Scotland I love Achiltibuie (esp the Summer Isles Hotel) Ullapool. Skye is dramatic, though I prefer Mull. The A82 has to be the most beautiful road in Britain. Or you could head to the top to Cape Wrath and Durness. cape Wrath is the most northerly point on the mainland (don't let them tell you it's John O'Groats).

One thing - don't underestimate the distances. Especially if travelling in remote places on single track roads with passing places and highland cattle sitting in the way.

Also never mention 1745.
