Laptops
« on: May 30, 2005, 01:42:48 AM »
I was planning on buying a laptop to take with me to London, but my mom just told me that she heard that since the electricity is different, American laptops won't work in Europe.  Now...  I find this hard to believe because laptops are pretty much the same no matter what country you buy them in, right?  So can I still get a laptop and use it over in London or not?

Most laptops can be used with several voltages. For example, my dell laptop AC cord's transformer label says that it can be used with any input voltage from 100-240V. Check the back of the transformer on your power cord. Hope this helps.

I have an Apple PowerBook G4.  Power is supplied by a transformer, and that transformer plugs into any mains voltage.  The transformer/power supply has a set of adaptor plugs to fit the world's various electrical outlets.

So buy a computer with that sort of transformer/power supply.

I have several laptops. One I brought over from the USA. And it works just fine here. I just switched the power cords. The ones I bought in the UK work fine in the USA when I switch the power cord. Laptop cords come in two halves. You only have to switch the half that plugs into the wall. I took a cord from my UK boom box and connected it to my US laptop adaptor. Does that make sense?

As far as voltage is concerned, power supplies come in three types:

#1.  A unit designed for a single voltage -- 120V in the U.S., 240V in the U.K.   In this case you would need to replace the unit with the appropriate type, or buy a separate transformer to run it on the higher British voltage.

#2.  A unit which is switchable to either 120 or 240V.  Just find the selector switch and change it, then use a suitable power cord or adapter.

#3.  A unit which will automatically adjust to run on 120 or 240V (and any voltage between).   Many of the latest units are of this type, so all you need to worry about is the power cord/plug.

Just check that the power supply for the computer you are considering will run on both 120V and 240V 50/60Hz and it will work fine in both the U.S. and the U.K.

I'm considering bringing a laptop with me to Scotland when I move in August.

Anyone have any issues with internet connections with a laptop brought from the US?

Thanks!

Is this also true for wireless internet?  My husband has his laptop set up for wireless internet and we wanted to set up my laptop but wondered if we could do it before we moved or should wait untiil after.

Just verify that your power supply works with 240v.. most decent ones support 100-240v.
