Where to rent near Glasgow
« on: June 01, 2005, 01:22:44 AM »
Hello from Michigan-

My name is Lynette and my huband, Bruce, and I will be moving to Glasgow (with our dog) in August.  I just joined UKY and posted a message similar to this in the "Welcome" section.  Please forgive me for repeating myself for those of you who read my other post...

If there's anyone living in/around Glasgow...I do have a question.  We will be looking for a rental as soon as we arrive.  I'd like to live in an area that's not too expensive, close to public transport, and in a safe neighborhood, as I love to take our dog for long walks.  Glasgow and the surrounding area are quite large and it would be good to have some suggestions for places to check out when renting.

Thanks in advance for your help -
Lynette

Welcome Kippen!

I don't know how much help this will be, but I can give a general breakdown of the parts of Glasgow.  As far as I know all parts of Glasgow are close to public transport it has an excellent train/bus system.  When we lived up there we didn't have a car and I can honestly say we didn't miss it.

The west end is usually considered the nicest (read poshest) part of town. I lived here as a student.  It has the University of Glasgow, culture, parks, etc, but is very expensive!  You can get reasonable accommodation but it will probably be a lot smaller than what you would get in another part of town.

The south side (Pollockshaws, Shawlands) is very nice, but doesn't have the reputation of the west end, so as of three years ago it was a lot more affordable, but still with the parks, museums, shops, restaurants, etc.  This is where we lived when I first moved over here permanently.

The north of Glasgow can be a bit hit and miss I think.  Places like Bishopbriggs and Robroyston are basically just suburbs, but they are very highly regarded and houses go at a premium.  You are very near the countryside here and walks in the Campsies are about 15 minutes away by car.  You could probably find something very reasonable in this area, but it is more of a dormer community.

I know very little about the east end, except what I have been told by other people.  It is not a particularly desireable part of town, but I am sure there are perfectly lovely areas of it.  I've know several people who came from that side of town, but they were all native to Glasgow and knew what areas were better than others.

Please excuse all spelling and grammer mistakes!  I might not be on for a few days, but if you have any other questions please let me know.  There are at least 10 other people on the site that probably know Glasgow better than I do!

Oh my!  Thanks for all the great information!

I visited Glasgow several years ago, but I wasn't taking notes on things like housing, as I was just at tourist and it was only in my wildest dreams that I thought I would move anywhere in Scotland.  I never really thought we'd actually make it happen!

No, there aren't.

Hello there!

My husband, who is originally from Glasgow has the following suggestions:

Partickhill, Partick, Broomhill, Jordanhill, Hillhead-all in the West End- if you can afford it, go for it

Shawlands isn't too bad, Kings Park is nice

East Kilbride, Clarkston, Barrhead

Avoid at all costs:

Easterhouse, Ballornock, Baillieston, Nitshill, Drumchapel, Darnley

Good luck with your search! :)

Hi Kippen,

I lived in Pollokshields, which is on the South side, very close to Shawlands, and although there are a few dodgy areas (as with any town/city), I found it on the whole to be very safe, and the cost of living pretty affordable.  The 2-bedroom flat that my flatmate and I shared was ₤500/month, just to give you an idea.  There are a couple of really nice parks where you would be able to walk your dog, as well as a number of nice restaurants/cafes in the area.  Also, the public transportation to the City Centre was very convenient and reliable, and in a very short time, you can be in the City Centre, taking advantage of all it has to offer.  I liked it a lot :)

Good luck with your move!
