Anyone familiar with this city?  Pros and cons of moving there?  Attitude towards Americans?  Number of Americans living there?  Weather?  I think I might move there.

I'm here, in Birmingham, been here almost 3 years now. Depends on where you are going to live really, my husband and I like it here, because it's central. Not too far to London, not too far to Wales, the city itself, well, it's got it's good points, and its bad, like any city I guess. But if you are willing to drive a bit, or take a train, there is lots to see and do, within a very near distance. If you decide to come here, this site will be a wonderful resource for you!

Im in Coventry but I go shopping in Brum (20 min away) and meet with "me maties". I like it. There's everything there you could want plus a nice airport and large train station!

We just recently moved to Solihull, we like it better than Birmingham, we are within walking distance of Solihull City Centre, Touchwood is a really great mall, they have an awesome library there, with an inside cafe, and an outside courtyard, and because it's next to the mall, there are some really neat restaurants, and you can take the food outside, and sit in the courtyard, there's a really big fountain, it's just nice to sit and chill, and eat, and watch people, and of course, read the books you just got from the library!! However, Birmingham city centre, has got loads of restaurants along the canal, and it's nice to sit and eat outside,(when the weather is good!)and watch the canal boats go by.

Niku2, first of all, my hubby keeps asking why you are moving to Brum. Second, we do a lot of shopping in Kings Heath, as there are a lot of charity shops (thrift stores) which are my passion!! But we've only really been on the 'high street' and haven't explored the entire area. I honestly don't know if I would live there or not. I don't know the entire area, but I (agains't my hubby) am leaning toward not.

Ah Brum,Englands armpit. Not bad if you like big cities and people who speak strangely.Seriously there are some very nice areas and some best avoided after dark.

lol--if i had a dollar for every time someone's asked me why i'm moving to birmingham...

my fiance is there, as is his family. he works in coventry for parcel force. we're going to start the serious house hunt after the new year.

i'm pretty sure we'll end up in ireland eventually, though, as that's where i really belong (been there many, many times to visit & work) & he has family in the north.

I'm actually thinking of looking into Birmingham (or suburbs of), if I don't come over on a work or student visa and have to go somewhere else for that reason.

I like very much the idea of being in the middle of somewhere, if that makes sense. You know, not being in the extreme north or extreme south of the country.

haha, I was thinking how that sounded a lot like what I'm used to when going into Memphis at night. At one point, Memphis was number 2 in violent crime!

Sorry to hijack this thread for a minute, but I have to shamefully admit that I haven't been to the Civil Rights Museum yet. I keep thinking I'll go with friends (some of whom are very interested in activism and the civil rights movement), but I just never get around to it  :-[

It'll be on my list of things to do before (if) I move away. Along with the Stax Museum of Rock and Soul :)
