I'm waiting (still) for my approval from the Nursing Midwifery Coucil so I can begin applying for jobs in Britain as a Nurse.  Any insight on nursing in the UK?
Also, will my same sex partner be able to come over on my work visa?

You and your partner will be eligible for an unmarried partner visa if you've been living together for 2 years.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

My gf and I are trying to move to London this summer (it all hinges on whether I can get a job offer).  I've done a lot of research on visas for unmarried partners, so feel free to PM if you have any questions about it.  (I'm a UK citizen, and she'd be getting the UP visa.)

If you haven't lived together for 2 years yet, there's the Civil Partnership Act that will be coming into effect at the end of December.  If you can wait until then (either for both of you to move or for him to join you) you could become partnered and he could join you as your spouse (note, you'd probably need a fiance-type visa before you could register for partnership, like they require for marriages now).

Thanks for the info regarding Civil Partnership Act, I didn't know if it was available to us, being Yankees and all ;D.  I finally received notice from the NMC and they have granted me full registration!!  YYYAAAAA!  Now my recruiter tells me there is a hiring freeze at the NHS that will make getting a job difficult.   :-[

There may also not be a hiring freeze in Scotland, so check there as well.

I've found loads of information on the UP visa scheme as well as the upcoming CP stuff at the Stonewall Immigration Group site:

http://www.stonewall-immigration.org.uk

There is also an attached message board that is occasionally monitored by solicitors, and contact information about solicitors you can call for more help...

Best,

Aye no hiring freezes up here in Scotland that i'm aware of.. I'm a  American RN here in the Fife region.. I started off up in Aberdeen on a work permit. Now am wating on word of naturalisation. Been here since July 99. Good place to check out the jobs is www.returntoscotland.com
.. Part of the problem may be that lots of places may not be willing to sponser the work permit.. Good Luck

Civil partnership is for same-sex couples only, and it is pretty much just like marriage.  It will be available starting mid-Dec.  As far as immigration, it seems that civil partnership will be handled just like marriage is.

MaleRN, I think you should be able to get partnered... actually, I don't know how it works for a work permit.  Can a person who is in the UK on a work permit get married/partnered to an American in the UK?  But there are also some legal relationships that the UK will accept as equivalent to their civil partnership.  For example, if you were to get a civil union in VT (or CT when that's available), they would consider you to be civil partners.  So you could do that here in the US first, and then apply as spouses, or at least that is my interpretation.

Here's the excerpt about that and the link.

"Same-sex couples who form certain "overseas relationships", that is certain legal relationships registered under the law of another country or territory, will automatically be treated as having formed a civil partnership and will not need to register in the UK as well, so long as they and their overseas relationship meets the requirements set out in the Civil Partnership Act.

These include requirements that the overseas relationship is either (a) one of the specified relationships listed in Schedule 20 to the Act, or (b) a relationship that meets the "general conditions" contained in section 214.

The list of specified relationships in Schedule 20 currently contains:
Belgium cohabitation légale (statutory cohabitation)
Belgium marriage
Canada: Nova Scotia domestic partnership
Canada: Quebec civil union
Denmark partnerskab (registered partnership)
Finland  rekisteröity parisuhde (registered partnership)
France pacte civile de solidarité (civil solidarity pact)
Germany Lebenspartnerschaft (life partnership)
Iceland staðfesta samvist (confirmed cohabitation)
Netherlands geregistreerde partnerschap (registered partnership)
Netherlands marriage
Norway partnerskap (registered partnership)
Sweden registrerat partnerskap (registered partnership)
United States of America: Vermont civil union

New relationships will be added to Schedule 20 as more countries or territories bring in gay marriage or civil partnership schemes. Recent developments include civil union legislation in New Zealand and Connecticut (USA). In Spain, a government backed gay marriage bill passed through the lower house of Parliament on 21 April 2005, and now goes before the Senate. These and any other new overseas schemes will now be considered for inclusion in Schedule 20."
