ars*-backward school rules...
« on: June 06, 2005, 05:54:38 PM »
Has your child's school have rules or traditions that you find ars* backwards??

My daughter is in reception...they have a playground that is not covered from the sun so when the summer sun comes(HA , HA , Ha...sorry) they have said that children should have sunblock put on before they come to school or the parent can come at a certain time to apply sunblock on them as they will not apply block on the child itself . This is because there are too many children to deal with and also about fear of abuse...OK fine.

Today I picked up Jess from school and she was given by the teacher a goody bag as one of the children had a birthday...in the bag was a party popper. Thought isn't that a bit dangerous to give ? perhaps they didn't check the bag...nope , I pull out the popper and Jess says "Mrs C said we can play with that when we get home... :-\\\\

So it's illegal to put protective sunscreen on my child but perfectly okay to hand them a gun powder substance ??? I thought those things weren't allowed to children under 5 ???

Well....the teachers can keep an eye and make sure the kids don't open their goody bags and play with the stuff.  But touching a child at all is something that no matter how careful they are, can still get them in deep trouble.  So I'm not sure the two can really be compared.

But that's just my opinion.

hmm....I see what you mean but really the point was that the popper was  dangerous to give...as you had quite a number of boys trying to aim it at each other in the playground when they left the classroom. As they said it's time consuming to apply cream , it's just as time consuming trying to monitor 60 children with poppers...what if one was stupid enough to think it was sweet? we've had 1 death and 1 serious injury  in that school and it's only june...I was just whining about what were the priorities? is it protecting the teacher or the students?

It's not a bad school but it certainly need improvement...we've just got a new headteacher and many of the parents are quite happy that the old one had moved on.

I'm with you Alicia - giving a 5 year old a party popper is weird.

That's not an issue for the teacher, though - it's for the parent who supplied the party bags.  Put the teacher in a bad situation, in my opinion.  Do they open the bags and take out something the parent spent time and money on (and was stupid enough not to clear with the teacher first...) and risk the parent's wrath (which these days, trust me, is no easy thing to face up to)?  Or do they do the best they can in making sure that the bags are left closed and possibly kept away from the kids at least whilst they're in school and under the direct supervision of the teacher?

It goes back to the parent's bad judgment, not the teacher's.

And same parent would probably be apoplectic if someone tried to touch their child, even to innocently put sunscreen on them to protect them from skin cancer...  ::)

Yeah ..it wasn't a good idea to give poppers as part of the goody bag. I'm just slightly miffed that the unbalance of some of the rules. The sunscreen wasn't a top example but one of many ..like we are not allowed to take video at plays but people were taking pictures with their mobile phones at the last recital ??? and this was by one of the lunchtime staff :-\\\\

If I wanted to give treats to the children in my daughter's class I had to approve them with her teacher first. Last Christmas I wanted to hand her classmates Christmas cards with a candycane reindeer attached to them..for this I had to ask the teacher first and then show what we were going to give them before she distributed them out..the same went for easter eggs...so really I'm assuming the same went for these goody bags as well.

oh well teachers have a lot on their plate and I think the teacher Jess is great and she has shown me that no matter her class she does know her students well :)
