GOT CAR...Need Maintance/Insurance Tips
« on: June 14, 2005, 11:31:48 PM »
Whats up good people ?

i was wondering if you could sort me out with a few basic " car care Q.'s " .

Do they have anything like " oil changers " here to get oil change and for basic tuneup on our newly acquired honda ?

We live in zone 2 in london..the garages i've approached look real dodgy and after watching horror stories on BBC documentary about rip-off garages..i wont recommend them to my worst enemy...ofcourse this is a generlization but you would be generalizing too if you saw the garages around here .

Also, about insurance, we will be registering the car under my name since hubby has yet to acquire UK license... i heard they give you a bit of a break as a female driver over 30...

BTW one odd observation we have made latley...we see no one doing " work under the hood " so to speak, its not like in the states where you might just chat up your neighbor and borrow his tools is it eh ? hehe..

Until later
Zu

For the oil change,if you have a local Quik Fit they are usually good & cheap, for a tune up best to ask around the locals for recomendations. As for the do it yourself brigade, most modern cars are all computer tuned, not easy to work on yourself apart from the most basic things.

Don't know what Kragens is/are,but if its car bits and bobs you're after, try Halfords, they're everywhere.Actually thinking about it,if you have a large Halfords near you I believe they also do oil changes/tune ups.

Zufan,
Cars in Britain don't need 3000 mile oil changes.  The general convention is to have a car serviced every 10,000 miles, few have regularly
check-ups more frequently.

I don't know if this has to do with the much higher octane of petrol or if cars are just made better for the UK market?

Try Halfords?  I dont know what their prices are like (i have only ever bought an air filter in there),  but they're the closest thing to Grand Auto that i can think of.
The guy that works on my car uses a scrap yard for a lot of things... my windscreen washer bottle developed a leak, and Subaru were going to charge me £266 for a new one (!!)... this guy got me one at the scrap yard for £20, including fitting it!

i see..i didnt even think of a scrap yard..but my car is a 89 honda so the scrap yard might be a good alternative . Finding an honest mechanic will be a challenge in London i think....with all the scams and rip-offs i have been seeing on tv, im a bit weary but hopefully i will find one through recommendations from this forum or others .

thanks again..i will see if they have a Halfords in London (east london).

By the way do you know a GOOD online london route planner..Just today we headed out to a boot sale and got a print out from AA route planner but the directions were so messed up that the roads never had the signs as per AA's instructions...

Cheers

London's roads are notoriously badly sign-posted.  Do you have an A-Z?  Usually that combined with the AA route master will get you there.   :)

I used to live in Stratford, and (if im remembering correctly) used to go to a Halfords in Barking.   It wasnt just an auto parts shop, they also had a garage and did repairs/maintenance.

Oterpop

Would you consider that Hartfords a decent/reasonably priced garage/auto parts shop ?

thanks

Mindy

Yea we did take the A-Z and infact i think that is what saved us...i just cant imagine how anyone gets around to an area he/she has never been too...the road signs are so incredibly badly posted that in most cases, unless youve been there before, it is almost impossible spot every road sign...or lack there of .

thanks

Well, like i said above, the only car part i've ever bought from them was an air filter, so i dont really know/ cant remember.  I reckon they're more expensive than an independent shop, and cheaper than going to the dealer!

It depends where you are and what you drive.   The late models, as already noted, are getting nearly impossible to work on without the proper diagnostic equipment.

Those of us who like old cars tend to do a lot of work on them ourselves, and out here in the sticks where neighbors tend to know each other better, there's still a help-each-other-out spirit.

I don't know if this has to do with the much higher octane of petrol or if cars are just made better for the UK market?

One factor is that climatic conditions are not so harsh and extreme here.  In areas such as the Midwest or the Canadian prairie provinces, for example,  it's not at all unusual to have a different viscosity oil for summer and winter .  In dry, desert areas air filters tend to need changing more frequently.  So it goes on.

Regarding Halfords, this chain has been around in Britain for decades, although the service and tune-up centers attached to some are relatively new.    You might not find the "15-minute oil & lube" places here, but there are some good deals to be had.

For example, ATS (specializing in tires, brakes, and exhausts) will generally give a free examination of the relevant items.  I was in the Norwich branch just recently and had a free tracking check (well, I slipped the guy £5 for his trouble, but the official line seems to be that the free checks build goodwill for when something does need replacing).
