Informal wedding dress--any ideas where to shop?
« on: June 17, 2005, 02:08:48 PM »
We're getting married in early September at the justice of the peace in the states.  I know you could just walk in with a pair of shorts, but with this being my one and only wedding, however small it is, I would like to find a nice but not expensive white summer dress.  I've looked at Dorothy Perkins and River Island but those dresses seem a bit too casual.  Any ideas?  E-bay won't work because neither of us have a credit/debit card.  Thanks for any suggestions!

Monsoon!

I walked through BHS this afternoon and they had some surprisingly nice dresses that I would consider wearing to a wedding.

I bought mine at Debenhams - it was marked down from the previous season AND when I picked it up it was during a Blue Cross sale - so it cost £124.  Not bad, as it was a *true* wedding dress!  ;D

I second Monsoon, though.  Was very tempted by stuff there.

Yes Monsoon is a good idea. I would also suggest Laura Ashley - that's where I got mine from.

Any of the department stores should have something nice.  John Lewis, Debehams, Selfridges.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

TKMaxx as well -- with prom season winding down, now's the time to find a good bargain there.  I know that the one here has about a million cocktail dresses right now.

Monsoon - that's where I got my wedding dress and the dress for my maid of honor. Elegantly casual, just the right note. And not too expensive, either!

I was just in Laura Ashley today and didn't see much that would work for a wedding. They've got a really weird collection on right now. I'd stick with Monsoon...
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I got my first one House of Fraiser, but I didn't do white as I did it on the second wedding (First was registry here)  It was champagne colour and marked down to £60 from like £250.

But really for the white traditional wedding dress, Monsoon and Debehams  are the best bet.  (They always have dresses marked down too!!!)

I know you could just walk in with a pair of shorts, but with this being my one and only wedding, however small it is, I would like to find a nice but not expensive white summer dress.

I wanted an informal dress but one that still looked at least somewhat like a wedding dress if that makes sense. I ended up buying a bridesmaids dress in a champagne colour and it was perfect - the seamstress even told me that it looked quite a lot like a wedding dress that she had just altered but at less than half the price! You could pick a style in tea length even if you wanted to err on the side of less formal.

Heard good things about Monsoon! I know SIL2B was looking there for hers.

I got mine at Oasis. It was a white strapless dress, with a beaded design at the bottom.

But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.
