I think it was LisaE who had a funny story about au gratin potatoes....but I wouldn't dare steal her thunder tho.  I'm sure if you emailed her, she'd tell you all about it. ;D

(Or if you want to check this out - http://www15.brinkster.com/wishstar/oct02/recipe.htm you can read her story.)

My version of au gratin potatoes involves -

Slicing potatoes (fairly thin)
Layering potatoes in a cassarole dish with knobs of butter
On the top layer, sprinkle about 1/4 cup of flour over the top and some more butter
Pour in milk until it is about 1/4 inch from the top of the dish
Cover with foil, bake for about 1 hour in a 200C oven, Uncover and bake until golden brown (about 10 minutes more)

We sometimes add bits of ham or bacon into this and it is just lovely too.

Yum!

I don't usually put any cheese in it, to be honest, but the sauce that gets made from the butter, flour and milk is very creamy and 'cheesey' if that makes any sense.  YOu could add a bit of cheese in the layers if you want to, just sprinkle it on top....either way, it'll be yummy!  :)
