Reverse Voltage Converter?
« on: June 20, 2005, 10:00:49 PM »
Hello folks,

While in England a few weeks ago I bought a prepaid UK mobile phone - figured it'd be nice to have a UK phone number for potential employers to contact me. Problem is, I can't find a voltage converter for the charger! I've looked and looked and can't find a UK-to-US voltage converters! Has anyone been able to find one? Thanks much for your help!

Alex

Do you need a voltage converter? I charge mine in both countries, just using different plug for the US and UK.

Look at the plug, does it say Input 100-240V?  If so then you can use a regular converter.  You can also just buy a charger for the phone here pretty cheap.  Most are fine to use a regular converter though.

Alex,

A few points to consider:

1.  As already mentioned, some of the latest chargers will work on a very wide range of supply voltage.  If the label says something like "90 to 250V" then all you need is the physical plug adapter.

2.  Alternatively, you could buy a suitable generic charger in the States.   To go this route you need to check the specifications for the output voltage and current of the charger and match them up.

3.  Don't forget that all but the oldest of electrical systems in American homes supply 240V as well as 120V.    You might have a 240V receptacle for a window air-cconditioner or something similar which you could use with an adapter lead.

4.  If you want/need to go with a 120-to-240V transformer, several mail-order places can supply them.  For example:

(This one doesn't have a British socket on it, but you could use your plug adapter on the output.)

All, thanks so much. It didn't occur to me I could just get a different charger for the phone - duh! :-)

Still, when I was looking for an actual 120-to-240V transformer, i was surprised how hard it was to find one that adapted to those big ol' UK plug prongs.
