Job salary Question

Hi all,

I have a question.  There's a job I'm interested in and they seem pretty interested in me.  However, I'm wondering if its just that the money isn't enough and I'm too naive to realize it.  It pays 19,000 pounds/year and I'll be working and driving (company car) around the NW of England and living near Lancaster where DH will be going to school.  We have 3 daughters as well.  Am I insane for even considering this job offer or is it possible to live on this over there?

I earn much less than that, and get by okay.

In many parts of this country £19 k would be considered a good/above average salary, particularly a starting salary. 

I would check their salary scale for the coming years & total hrs, but everything is relative and I would certainly thing that's good start.

Don't just sit there!  Take the job!

£19000 in the NW is quite a decent wage.

What line of work are you in?  That's the main issue as to whether £19,000 is a reasonable salary.  My advice is that if you don't ask, you don't get - so go back and ask for more.  You'll need evidence of comparable salaries and present in a very positive way.

I think the average wage across the country is £23,000 pa, generally higher in London and the South East, and of course with huge variations across different jobs.

As to whether you could live with 3 kids and a husband on £19,000 pa in Lancaster - I'm sure you'd be OK, but you may want to check out the cost of housing first, which can be very expensive ... would you be eligible for University housing or would your employers give you any kind of relocation expenses???  The company car is a good deal - running a car in the UK is very expensive.

By the way, Lancaster would be a great place to live, especially if you like the countryside - this may outweigh any tightening of belts that you may need to do!!!

That sounds very generous for the region you're in. 

Also, the cost of living in the north is much lower than in London and the southeast.

What line of work are you in?

I'm a merchandiser with some experience in training sales associates about how the products they're selling.  That's exactly what this job is about too.  When I sent them my CV they replied in less than a day!  At first I was ecstatic, but then my caution kicked in and I realized that I knew how much money that was in the US, but not cost of living etc in the NW UK.

that's what, like earning $35K in the US. that wouldn't be a good london salary since london being more expensive than almost anywhere in the US, that would be like earning $35K in new york or san fran.

but up north, which i'm guessing is cheaper than most places in the US, well, maybe that's like earning what, $40K in kansas or nebraska

it's all the same at the end of the day. what's the average US salary - i doubt it's much higher than $30K anyway
