The Most Important Meal Of The Day
« on: June 24, 2005, 04:27:48 PM »
So, what do normally you have for breakfast - if you do eat breakfast, that is?

What are your favourite breakfast foods?

Do you often like to eat breakfasty foods for other meals?

(For those who have immigrated either to the UK from the US or to the US from the UK)What - if anything - has changed in what you eat for breakfast since you have moved to another country?

I always have breakfast. Always. Coffee!!! And either a piece or two of whole wheat toast or a bowl of cereal (either Shreddies or Alpen.) When it's cold outside and I've got the time I sometimes make oatmeal and if it's a really specially occasion dh will do a fry-up or I'll make pancakes. I've always had pretty much the same routine here and in the US. But I miss going out to breakfast which we never do here but I did pretty much every weekend in San Francisco - the hangover breakfast at about 11 or 12:00. LOL. In fact that's probably the only ritual that I really and truly miss from the US.

I tend to eat a big bowl of oatmeal during the week, as well.  I like to make it with soya milk and put chopped up dates in it to sweeten it without any added sugar.  When it's not oats, then it's some kind of cereal (preferably whole grain).

My all time favourite breakfast foods are eggs and bacon and  begian waffles.

I do like to eat breakfast foods for other meals (especially for tea).

And, I have changed some of what I eat since moving to the UK.  I don't eat as much dairy (so I use soya on my cereal or in my oats), and, where as I used to sleep through breakfast, now I have to be up for work, so I like to eat a good, hearty breakfast that will keep me going through the morning.

I, too, used to enjoy going out for breakfast in the US.  The closest thing I get to it here is going out for coffee and a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese on Saturday mornings sometimes.

I almost always have plain nonfat Greek yogurt with fresh sliced strawberries and a healthy dollop of dark honey.

I'm one of those people who totally needs breakfast to get through the day. I don't understand people, like my SO, who can get by until noon on just a cup of tea.

I always eat Bitesize Shredded Wheat with skim milk, usually mixed with either sliced banana or another cereal like Fruitful Shredded Wheat to make it more interesting. I also always have a cup of coffee with that... can't live without it.

I always eat cereal as a snack no matter what time of day it is... I love the stuff. I also occasionally make myself an omelette in the evening for a snack.

My all time favorite breakfast foods are the unhealthiest ones of course, the kind you can get in a diner, which I never eat anymore: egg, sausage, bacon, etc... the works. If that was actually good for you I'd probably eat it almost every morning.

I eat brekkie and have a cuppa every morning.  It's usually either yogurt w/muesli and fresh fruit or a wholewheat toast w/Bonne Marie jam.  Sometimes I have porridge, but the quick cook type.

Oh, yes, that's the only kind I bother messing around with; it's just as good for you as the kind that takes 20 odd minutes to cook and is done in less than a fourth of that time.  I use Morningflake's Superfast Oats.

I have some great slowcooker recipes for oatmeal.  Throw it all in on Sunday night and next morning it's hot and ready.  I usually double or triple the recipe so I have enough for the rest of the week.  Mmm.. I love oatmeal.

I'm not a huge cereal fan but do really like oatmeal in the winter with raisins and brown sugar. If I do have cereal it's usually Grapenuts with fruit of some sort (bananas, strawberries, blueberries). Sometimes I'll have shredded wheat or something. But I have to have a serious bit of protein no matter what... so if I'm having cereal, I'll have a small piece of cheese, too. I prefer toast with laughing cow cheese or peanut butter and banana. We try to do fry ups on the weekends but I do them pretty low fat (i.e. there's no real 'frying' going on).
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

This is my favorite.  The recipe is for a small pot, and I have a large one (you can fit a small roast in it) so I usually triple it.

1 cup steel-cut oats
1/2 cup raisins or dried cherries, dried blueberries, or sweetened dried cranberries
1 teaspoon apple pie spice, or ground cinnamon mixed with a pinch of ground cloves, nutmeg & allspice
4 cups water
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or granulated maple sugar

Combine all the ingredients in the slowcooker.  Cover and cook on low for 7-9 hours.

It will be thick, so I like to pour a generous helping of milk and some brown sugar (I like it sweet).  You can really have fun with the spices - I like to add cardamom and ginger.

I can't function without breakfast!  I start with a quart of tea, always.  I make it in a BIG teapot with a wooly cosy on the pot to keep it warm.  I just switched from a huge mug to a large bone china cup and saucer.  My nana was right--I swear the tea tastes better.

My favorite meal in the UK is bacon, eggs, mushrooms and onions fried together, ketchup, and a slice of toast.   My niece and nephew got a bunch of hens.  There's nothing like a fresh egg.  And tea.

In the US, I love southern, make that Southern, breakfasts.  Chicken fried steak, cheese grits, and gravy or waffles with scrambled eggs.  And tea.

The usual meal is oatmeal with yoghurt and fruit or a sandwich.  Peanut butter and banana or a grilled cheese are favorites when I have to get outdoors early.  And tea.

I'm going to try FunGirl's receipe.  It sounds so yummy.
When I find a funnier sig than twistedncynical's, it will be here.
