Some British guy told me last night that it is frowned upon by ladies to drink pints in pubs-women should only order half pints.  I mean, I usually drink half because it takes me longer to drink-but if this guy is telling the truth (not sure how many he had that night) then what a crock of sh*t.

I asked hubs...he said (not that he thinks this) it's considered 'not particularly genteel' and when I said 'Says who?'  He said 'But personally I find it a turn on' ::)

But I've heard something along those lines before -- "ladies' drinks":  half pints, shandys, Pimms, any kind of sweet (think umbrellas) drink I guess?  Similarly, it's considered unmanly for a guy not to take full pints or to order shandys, Pimms, sweet mixed drinks -- anything other than full pints & hard spirits.

what is a pimm and a shandy?

Shandy is a mixture of beer & lemonade (but British lemonade which is different from American lemonade---more a fizzy drink instead of sweet/sour juice-like drink)

Pimms is a bottled liquor here, usually mixed with (again British) lemonade or punch-type mixers (not sure what Pimms tastes like straight, but I bought a bottle awhile back for when my in-laws come, so I'll let you know)--this is sometimes considered a bit of a summer drink

I can't stand lager or beer  :P.

I think I only like fruity drinks. But I get buzzed easily.

Carolyn, I will check out that book. I love cultural studies.

Let's take our wigs off in the shopi aisle and fight it out.

I think there may be more awareness of class and where you've come from and where you are now here. DH had a bit of a hard time with it as a kid. He was more or less 'middle class' but ended up at a school that was very working class where he was harassed for being 'too posh' and then at one where he was definitely one of the poorer families and then bothered for that.

I've also experienced what what I call education-ism here. I worked retail in a small northern town for a bit and was the ONLY person with a higher ed degree of any sort. I always felt they went out of their way to be a bit dismissive of me and that's the only reason I can think why. I did similar retail work in the US with similar colleagues and it was a non-issue.

Just my 2p.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Pimm's is absolutely lovely on a warm summer afternoon! There are several different varieties of the alcoholic bottled mixture -- Pimm's No. 1 is gin-based, No. 6 is vodka-based (my choice), etc. I'm not sure what numbers other ones are, but I believe there's a rum-based one and a brandy-based one. It's generally mixed with lemonade and served over ice, with slices of orange, apple, cucumber, etc., and a sprig of mint. So nice!

I think they only make the No.1 cup and No. 6 cup now... the others are all finished.
I've *heard* of this elusive No. 6 cup, but have never actually seen it in a shop, or tasted it!

Off topic, but what is Ocado?  I have seen this in other places, but have no idea what it is.
