Hash Browns?
« on: July 17, 2002, 06:50:16 PM »
Is it just me or what, I've been here three years and have never seen hash browns in stores, today I saw them in two shops' frozen sections. Is it new or did I have I been overlooking them for 3 years? ::)

I'd say it's you, but our Sainsbury's is one where they try out new products so that could be why I've been able to get hashbrown for at least a few years.  I know what you mean though,  I saw Pepperidge Farm the other day, and for the life of me couldn't figure out if they'd always been there or if was a new thing.   :)

Heres what got me.
I stopped at a KFC on the way home from the airport and it nearly broke my heart that they had no mashed potatoes at KFC! How can you have KFC without the mashed potatoes?! ANYWAY - - - they put a hashbrown ON my chicken sandwich!!!

Sigh.
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

...and no Southern-style biscuits.  [smiley=cry2.gif]

Yeah KFC in Atlanta was a true experience for my hubby.  After seeing the bar filled with mac-n-cheese, mashed potatoes, etc, he said, "Ahhhh, so that's why people eat here!" He absolutely hates KFC here but loved it there.

I got some free hashbrowns with my Tesco online this week for some reason.  Hadn't ever seen them before either!

I've really never looked.  When I got the hankerin' for some hash browns, we just shredded the potatoes and made our own, which turned out really nice.  I'm glad you found some though!

You might also want to try McCains Rostis, in the frozen potato section.  They are realllly nice ... like chunky round hash browns.

Why t-mac, what a clever girl you are!
Why have i never thought of this... McCain's Rosti's are delicious!  ;)

Hash browns are easy to make from scratch, too, if you're unable to find them or rostis.
Just grate your potato with a cheese grater (and onion if you like it) ... make sure you get all of the excess moisture out with paper towels, though, before frying.

I do the same thing, but (and this is weird) when we were out today, I was wondering if there's a way to freeze them, before cooking them, so I could just have one whenever I wanted without having to do the grating. Then I come home and see this thread......anyway, I'd have to cook them first, or the potato would go the brown. Right? How cool it would be to have homemade in my freezer any old time though.
